Gender-Based Violence in Mexico - Narratives, the State and Emancipations: Ana Luisa Sánchez Hernández, Miguel Angel... Gender-Based Violence in Mexico - Narratives, the State and Emancipations
Ana Luisa Sánchez Hernández, Miguel Angel Martínez Martínez, Francisco Díaz Estrada
R4,143 Discovery Miles 41 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the roots of systemic aggression against women in contemporary Mexico, and the connection between social practices and the institutional permissiveness of the Mexican State with regard to gendered violence. Since the democratic transition at the end of the 1990s, Mexico has registered an increase in the intensity and types of violence that have made life in some regions almost unsustainable. The chapters in this volume consider that capitalism, colonialism and patriarchy are interrelated processes that employ the technologies of gender and race as a continuation of the symbolic hegemony that treats feminized and racialized bodies as disposable. Against this background, it becomes necessary to understand from different dimensions the systemic violence against women as well as the processes of articulation between social practices and the permissiveness of the State in the face of aggression. Gender-Based Violence in Mexico mobilizes a dialogue between writings, fields of knowledge, causes and situations as essential tools for the struggle against gender violence. As a situated work that underlines the systematic roots of the violence that keeps women in subaltern positions, the text seeks an insurrection, an uprising of the bodies that invite naming the abject, peripheral and unseen populations of the project of globalized life, woven by the obsession of success and prestige. It presents a counter-conclusion in the manner of a beginning in the desire to elaborate counter-political and counter-pedagogical strategies of non-coercive experiences, where questions and debates are not a sign of belligerence but of vitality and care for the body-territories. Gender-Based Violence in Mexico will appeal to scholars of sociology, criminology, gender and Latin American studies with interests in gendered violence and injustice.

The Spirit and the Screen - Pneumatological Reflections on Contemporary Cinema: Chris E W Green, Steven Félix-Jäger The Spirit and the Screen - Pneumatological Reflections on Contemporary Cinema
Chris E W Green, Steven Félix-Jäger; Contributions by Kutter Callaway, Coleby Delgado, Crystal Downing, …
R2,146 Discovery Miles 21 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Spirit and the Screen engages contemporary films from the perspective of pneumatology to give theologies of culture fruitful new perspectives that begin with the Spirit rather than other common theological contact points (Christology, anthropology, theological ethics, creation, eschatology, etc.). This book explores pertinent pneumatological issues that arise in film, as well as literary devices that draw allusions to the Spirit. It offers three main contributions: first, it explores how Christian understandings of the person and work of the Spirit illuminate the nature of film and film-making; second, it shows that there are in fact “Spirit figures†in film (as distinct from but inseparable from Christ-figures), even if sometimes they’re not intended as such, “Spirit-led†characters, are moved to act “prophetically,†against their inclinations and in excess of their skill or knowledge and with eccentric, life-giving creativity; third, it identifies subtle and explicit symbolizations of the Spirit in pop culture, symbolizations that requires deep, careful thinking about the Christian doctrine of the Spirit and generate new horizons for cultural analysis. The contributors of this book explore these issues, asking how Christian convictions and experiences of the Spirit might shape the way one thinks about films and film-making.

Occulted (Paperback): Amy Rose, Ryan Estrada Occulted (Paperback)
Amy Rose, Ryan Estrada; Illustrated by Jeongmin Lee
R300 Discovery Miles 3 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the Hale-Bopp soared across the sky in 1997, Amy Rose thought it was the start of an amazing new future. Instead, it brought news of a horrible tragedy at the Heaven’s Gate compound just down the road. Amy had always known there was something off about the community she grew up in. She had been forbidden from going to school, or visiting the library because the leader told her that there was no use learning about a world that was about to end. But it was not until the news of the deaths at Heaven’s Gate invaded the temple walls that she heard a new word that explained everything...cult.  She must risk everything to indulge in secret trips to an abandoned, off-limits library that teaches her everything she was not meant to know. That Gandhi was not a space alien. That Star Trek wasn’t real. That her community was built on a lie. And most importantly, the banned books give her all the information that she needs to escape. Occulted is another shocking true-life graphic memoir about the power of literary freedom from the people who brought you the Eisner and Ringo-nominated, Freeman Award-winning Banned Book Club. Ryan Estrada (co-author of Banned Book Club) has teamed up with real life cult survivor Amy Rose (co-author of Star Trek: Connected to the Truth) to bring you the story. With gorgeous art by Jeongmin Lee, Occulted is a haunting, inspiring tale of bravery and rebellion that illustrates how to recognize and fight against those who try to control you.

Beyond the Victorian/ Modernist Divide - Remapping the Turn-of-the-Century Break in Literature, Culture and the Visual Arts... Beyond the Victorian/ Modernist Divide - Remapping the Turn-of-the-Century Break in Literature, Culture and the Visual Arts (Paperback)
Anne Florence Gillard Estrada, Anne Besnault-Levita
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Beyond the Victorian/ Modernist Divide contributes to a new phase in the Victorian-modern debate of traditional periodization through the perspective lens of literature and the visual arts. Breaking away from conventionally fixed discourses and dichotomies, this book utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to examine the existence of overlaps and unexplored continuities between the Victorians, the post-Victorians and the modernists, including the fields of music, architecture, design, science, and social life. Furthermore, the book remaps the cultural history of two critical meta-narratives and their interdependence - the myth of "high modernism" and the myth of "Victorianism" - by building on recent scholarly work and addressing the question of the "turn of the century break theory" with a new set of arguments and contributions. The essays presented within acknowledge the existence of a break-theory in modernism, but question this theory by re-contextualising it while uncovering long-masked continuities between artists, genres and forms across the divide. The collection offers a new approach to modernism, Edwardianism, and Victorianism; utilizing the cross-fertilisation of interdisciplinary approaches, and by combining contributions that look forward from the Victorians with other contributions that look backward from the modernists. While literary modernism and its vexed relationships with the nineteenth century is a central subject of the book, further analysis includes artistic discourses and theories stemming from history, the visual arts, science, music and design. Each chapter offers a fresh interpretation of individual artists, navigating away from characteristic classifications of works, authors and cultural phenomena. Ultimately, the volume argues that though periodization and genre categories play substantial roles in this divide, it is also essential to be critically aware of the way cultural history has been, and continues to be, constructed.

Rising India - Status and Power (Paperback): Rajesh Basrur, Kate Sullivan De Estrada Rising India - Status and Power (Paperback)
Rajesh Basrur, Kate Sullivan De Estrada
R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While India's prospects as a rising power and its material position in the international system have received significant attention, little scholarly work exists on India's status in contemporary world politics. This Routledge Focus book charts the ways in which India's international strategies of status seeking have evolved from Independence up to the present day. The authors focus on the social dimensions of status, seeking to build on recent conceptual scholarship on status in world politics. The book shows how India has made a partial, though incomplete, shift from seeking status by rejecting material power and proximity to major powers, to seeking status by embracing both material power and major power relationships. However, it also challenges traditional understandings of the linear relationship between material power and status. Seven decades of Indian status seeking reveal that the enhancement of material power is one of only several routes Indian leaders have envisaged to lead to higher status. By arguing that a state requires more than material power to achieve status, this book reshapes understandings of both status seeking and Indian foreign policy. It will be of interest to academics and policy makers in the fields of international relations, foreign policy, and Indian studies.

CLUB When Kim Hyun Sook started college in 1983 she was ready for her world to open up. After acing her exams and sort-of convincing her traditional mother that it was a good idea for a woman to go to college, she looked forward to soaking up the ideas of Western Literature far from the drudgery she was promised at her family's restaurant. But literature class would prove to be just the start of a massive turning point, still focused on reading but with life-or-death stakes she never could have imagined. This was during South Korea's Fifth Republic, a military regime that entrenched its power through censorship, torture, and the murder of protestors. In this charged political climate, with Molotov cocktails flying and fellow students disappearing for hours and returning with bruises, Hyun Sook sought refuge in the comfort of books. When the handsome young editor of the school newspaper invited her to his reading group, she expected to pop into the cafeteria to talk about Moby Dick, Hamlet, and The Scarlet Letter. Instead she found herself hiding in a basement as the youngest member of an underground banned book club. And as Hyun Sook soon discovered, in a totalitarian regime, the delights of discovering great works of illicit literature are quickly overshadowed by fear and violence as the walls close in. In BANNED BOOK CLUB, Hyun Sook shares a dramatic true story of political division, fear-mongering, anti-intellectualism, the death of democratic institutions, and the relentless rebellion of reading.

Anne Florence Gillard Estrada, Martine Lambert-Charbonnier, Charlotte Ribeyrol
R4,135 Discovery Miles 41 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reflecting Walter Pater's diverse engagements with literature, the visual arts, history, and philosophy, this collection of essays explores new interdisciplinary perspectives engaging readers and scholars alike to revisit methodologies, intertextualities, metaphysical positions, and stylistic features in the works of the Victorian essayist. A revised contextual portrait of Pater in Victorian culture questions representations of the detached aesthete. Current editorial and biographical projects show Pater as fully responsive to the emergence of modern consumer culture and the changes in readership in Britain and the United States. New critical views of rarely studied texts enhance the image of Pater as a cosmopolitan aesthete dialoguing with contemporary culture. Conceptual analysis of his texts brings new light to the aesthetic paradox embodied by Pater, between artistic detachment and immersion in the Heraclitean flux of life. Finally, aestheticism is redefined as proposing new artistic and linguistic synthesis by merging art forms and embracing interart poetics.

East Asia and Latin America - The Unlikely Alliance (Paperback): Kotaro Horisaka, Shoji Nishijima East Asia and Latin America - The Unlikely Alliance (Paperback)
Kotaro Horisaka, Shoji Nishijima; Contributions by Lily M. Bravo Castillo, Akio Hosono, Taik-Hwan Jyoung, …
R1,385 Discovery Miles 13 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume sheds new light on the much-neglected topic of current and potential relations between East Asia and Latin America. The contributors contend that close cooperation between peoples and governments of these two areas is feasible and desirable and indeed that it could have beneficial effects on the shaping of a new world order in the face of globalization and in the wake of 9/11. In a genuinely comparative set of essays, the book focuses on two broad themes: economic and political connections between East Asia and Latin America, and similarities and differences in developmental paths and public policies. Part I explores economic linkages, emphasizing trade, investment, and patterns of regional integration. Part II compares economic development strategies, reopening arguments about the substance and utility of the so-called Asian model. Part III offers a systematic comparison of currency crises and policy responses in Mexico, Thailand, Korea, and Brazil. Part IV explores the changing roles of the major powers, China, Japan, and the United States. A concluding chapter presents practical suggestions and policy guidelines on ways to strengthen ties between the two regions. By bringing together original work by senior scholars and professional experts from both regions, the book offers an authoritative, comprehensive, and provocative set of perspectives. It will be essential reading for specialists and advanced students in international relations, international economics, foreign policy, economic development, public policy, and East Asian and Latin American studies.

The First Maya Civilization - Ritual and Power Before the Classic Period (Paperback, New edition): Francisco Estrada-Belli The First Maya Civilization - Ritual and Power Before the Classic Period (Paperback, New edition)
Francisco Estrada-Belli
R1,223 Discovery Miles 12 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the Maya kings of Tikal dedicated their first carved monuments in the third century A.D., inaugurating the Classic period of Maya history that lasted for six centuries and saw the rise of such famous cities as Palenque, Copan and Yaxchilan, Maya civilization was already nearly a millennium old. Its first cities, such as Nakbe and El Mirador, had some of the largest temples ever raised in Prehispanic America, while others such as Cival showed even earlier evidence of complex rituals. The reality of this Preclassic Maya civilization has been documented by scholars over the past three decades: what had been seen as an age of simple village farming, belatedly responding to the stimulus of more advanced peoples in highland Mesoamerica, is now know to have been the period when the Maya made themselves into one of the New World's most innovative societies. This book discusses the most recent advances in our knowledge of the Preclassic Maya and the emergence of their rainforest civilization, with new data on settlement, political organization, architecture, iconography and epigraphy supporting a contemporary theoretical perspective that challenges prior assumptions.
