In patients with coronary artery disease, surgical revascu-
larization with arterial or venous bypass grafts not only relieves
symptoms, but also prolongs life. The result of such interventions,
however, is frequently impaired by graft dysfunction and occlusion.
This monograph highlights the clinical importance of coronary
artery bypass graft disease and, in particular, the use of modern
diagnostic techniques to assess graft structure and function. The
molecular and cellular mechanisms of coronary bypass graft disease
are ex- tensively discussed with several chapters devoted to
prophy- lactic medical therapy. The indication, technique and
results of reinterventions with balloon angioplasty, reope- ration
or transplantation in patients with graft failure are also
reviewed.
A critical phase in coronary heart disease, unstable angina, is
thoroughly discussed in contributions by well-known experts. Since
myocardial infarction still belongs to the main causes of death,
this topic is highly relevant for the present research and possible
future treatment of coronary heart disease. The major recent
advances made in the pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of
unstable angina are reported in depth.
Biomarkers - which may be enzymes, hormones, biologic substances,
or other markers of cardiac stress and malfunction - appear to have
growing clinical importance in heart failure. Many biomarkers
appear to provide important information about the cause of heart
failure or the identification of those at risk for heart failure or
appear to be useful in risk stratification, in the diagnosis of
heart failure, or in monitoring therapy. This issue discusses the
current and potential future role of biomarkers and includes
articles that explore individual biomarkers in depth.
Atlas of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography is a comprehensive
atlas containing photomicrographs, anatomic illustrations, tables,
and charts paired with extensive legends and explanations that are
supplemented by extensive research, peer-reviewed articles, and
textbooks. In addition to providing historical perspective and
current direction for computed tomography, this atlas focuses on
research involving coronary artery diseases and anomalies,
congestive heart failure, atherosclerotic plaques and asymptomatic
disease, as well as imaging techniques, including preparation,
acquisition, and processing, involving the great vessels and
carotids, the peripheral vasculature, and coronary and pulmonary
veins. There also will be discussion of the role of computed
tomography in the emergency room and in private cardiology
practice.
