This book provides teachers and students of literature with a
resource that gives them guidance to the philosophical influences
on literary criticism and literary figures. Its goal is to lead
teachers and students to a greater understanding of concepts with
which they may have some familiarity. The writers chosen are those
whose works most commonly appear in high school and college
literature anthologies. The text describes major philosophical
influences reflected in their writings as well as references to
philosophical works that are known to have played a part in their
intellectual and aesthetic development.
This volume is a source of philosophical influences in fiction,
poetry, and drama. The entries on 123 writers, arranged in
alphabetical order, are supplemented by a section of brief
bio-bibliographical profiles of more than 75 relevant philosophers
and a glossary of philosophical terms, concepts, and movements.
Following each author study is a selected bibliography of suggested
sources for further reading. The book ends with a list of general
sources on literary theory and philosophy, stressing their
interrelationships. A cross-referencing system is provided for the
convenience of readers. Symbols within the entries guide the reader
to entries in the philosopher section, the glossary, and to other
author entries. Students and teachers of both literature and
philosophy will find this work of extreme interest.
These chapters are rooted in a World Council of Churches conference
of Historic Peace Churches in Asia that took place in Solo,
Indonesia. There, as part of the WCC's Decade to Overcome Violence,
Asian Christians engaged interfaith diversity, violence, and
radical pluralism in Asia. Konrad Raiser, World Council of Churches
General Secretary, 1992-2003, observes in the Foreword that "This
volume is another example of the very creative contribution that
the Historic Peace Churches are continuing to make to the
ecumenical search for reconciliation and peace. For teachers and
students engaged in developing a new approach to an ecumenical
ethics of peace and for those committed to overcoming violence in
their local context, the book provides valuable insights and
welcome encouragement." Ruthann Knechel Johansen, President,
Bethany Theological Seminary, says that "Courageous and imaginative
contributors from Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippines,
and Australia prophetically and poetically call people of all
religious faiths to listen to voices from the margins of the
world's societies, to embrace with wonder and gratitude the rich
diversity of human cultures and religious pluralism, and to work
tirelessly and joyfully for God's shalom, salam, and peace with
justice throughout the earth." Fernando Enns, VU University
Amsterdam, Chair for Theology and Ethics, Faculty of Theology,
points out that "Historic Peace Churches--Mennonites, Church of the
Brethren, and Society of Friends--have kept alive the witness for
peace with justice within the global ecumenical familiy of
churches, not only during the past Decade to Overcome Violence.
This volume presents another strong contribution to the ongoing
search for a credible and faithful Christian presence in the midst
of religious pluralism, in face of religious radicalism and the
violence of poverty."
Semmaster's Thoughts are poems written and based on the struggles
of a small town boy trying to cope with being different. He was too
tall to be a midget or dwarf and not tall enough to be "normal."
His self esteem sunk lower than a clam at the bottom of a pond when
his brother drowned in a lake on a farm that he was working on. His
brother was sixteen years old, in the prime of his life, leaving
his fourteen years old brother to ponder how to continue life
without his mentor. Tommy, the young boy's brother, was perceived
as a god, with the boy's entire identity dependent on the
personality and actions of this boyhood man. The gift of lyrical
expression was thrust within the soul of this boy, to connect with
a higher and mightier mentor, to guide him through adulthood. As he
grew into a man, a soldier, a husband and a father, the gift took
control of the little man as he began to master his craft. The
poems in this book show the progression of the mind of a troubled
boy's evolution into a man of controversy. This book delves into
the complexities, the simple, the humorous and reflective views of
"The Little Man" who grew to be known as Semmaster. Calligraphy on
front cover done by Kris L. Stephens.
The pastoral ministry is in danger of losing its focus, say the
authors of this perceptive and timely study. Specialization in
preaching, counseling, evangelism, administration, and education
has diffused the impact of practical theology. And because of
competing ideas as to what now is central, the very image of
ministry may be breaking down. Foundations for a Practical Theology
of Ministry responds to the problem by introducing a specific
method for doing practical theology which will be welcomed by
concerned church leaders everywhere.
Presenting a realistic, workable answer to those who call for a
revival of this vital discipline, Drs. James N. Poling and Donald
E. Miller propose that the unifying image for ministry becomes the
formation of the community of faith. After developing this as the
most appropriate base for the practice of theology, they carefully
outline their method and show how it will work by demonstrating its
success in the actual experiences of typical congregations.
For Christian leaders who seek to renew the integrity of
ministry and restore the character of pastoral leadership, this
significantbook will provide a solid foundation. And for
individuals interested or involved in education for the future of
the church, this important resource will prove invaluable."
