The Vanished Northwest Passage Arctic Expedition: Lisa M Bolt-Simons The Vanished Northwest Passage Arctic Expedition
Lisa M Bolt-Simons; Illustrated by Eugene Smith
R251 R205 Discovery Miles 2 050 Save R46 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In 1845, Sir John Franklin commanded two ships on an expedition to find a Northwest Passage from England through the Arctic and over to Asia. If successful, the route would be a faster way to get goods from Asia to Europe and back. But success was not on the cards for Franklin’s expedition. Only recently, the sunken ships were discovered in the icy Arctic waters. What happened to Franklin and his men, and what messages did they leave behind?

W.Eugene Smith; Sam Stephenson; Foreword by Robin D.G. Kelley
R1,019 Discovery Miles 10 190 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Reissue of an acclaimed collection of images from photographer W. Eugene Smith's time in a New York City loft among jazz musicians. In 1957, Eugene Smith walked away from his longtime job at Life and the home he shared with his wife and four children to move into a dilapidated, five-story loft building at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City's wholesale flower district. The loft was the late-night haunt of musicians, including some of the biggest names in jazz-Charles Mingus, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk among them. Here, from 1957 to 1965, he made nearly 40,000 photographs and approximately 4,000 hours of recordings of musicians. Smith found solace in the chaotic, somnambulistic world of the loft and its artists, and he turned his documentary impulses away from work on his major Pittsburg photo essay and toward his new surroundings. Smith's Jazz Loft Project has been legendary in the worlds of art, photography, and music for more than forty years, but until the publication of this book, no one had seen his extraordinary photographs or read any of the firsthand accounts of those who were there and lived to tell the tales.

W.Eugene Smith; Edited by Sam Stephenson; Foreword by Ross Gay; Contributions by Alan Trachtenberg
R783 Discovery Miles 7 830 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

New edition of poignant selected images from famed Life photographer W. Eugene Smith’s Pittsburgh project.   In 1955, having just resigned from his high-profile but stormy career with Life Magazine, W. Eugene Smith was commissioned to spend three weeks in Pittsburgh and produce one hundred photographs for noted journalist and author Stefan Lorant’s book commemorating the city’s bicentennial. Smith ended up staying a year, compiling twenty thousand images for what would be the most ambitious photographic essay of his life. But only a fragment of this work was ever seen, despite Smith's lifelong conviction that it was his greatest collection of photographs.   In 2001, Sam Stephenson published for the first time an assemblage of the core images from this project, selections that Smith asserted were the “synthesis of the whole,†presenting not only a portrayal of Pittsburgh but of postwar America. This new edition, updated with a foreword by the poet Ross Gay, offers a fresh vision of Smith's masterpiece.

Lynne Rickards was fascinated by the story of Mairi Chisholm, a teenage motorcycle enthusiast who was only 18 when war was declared in 1914. Instead of retreating to the safety of her privileged life as a wealthy debutante, Mairi and her best friend Elsie Knocker rode their motorbikes to London and volunteered as Women’s Auxiliary dispatch drivers. Soon spotted as a fearless and skilful driver, Mairi was recruited to join Dr Hector Munro’s Flying Ambulance Corps, and she and Elsie spent most of the war on the Western Front retrieving wounded soldiers from the battlefields and patching them up, saving over 1,000 lives. Lynne couldn’t help but be inspired by this amazing young woman, and was thrilled to have a chance to share her story in Mairi’s Motorbike.

From the publisher of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies "comes a new tale of romance, heartbreak, and tentacled mayhem.
"Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters "expands the original text of the beloved Jane Austen novel with all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities. As our story opens, the Dashwood sisters are evicted from their childhood home and sent to live on a mysterious island full of savage creatures and dark secrets. While sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, her romantic sister Marianne is courted by both the handsome Willoughby and the hideous man-monster Colonel Brandon. Can the Dashwood sisters triumph over meddlesome matriarchs and unscrupulous rogues to find true love? Or will they fall prey to the tentacles that are forever snapping at their heels? This masterful portrait of Regency England blends Jane Austen's biting social commentary with ultraviolent depictions of sea monsters biting. It's survival of the fittest--and only the swiftest swimmers will find true love

India as a Secular State (Hardcover): Donald Eugene Smith India as a Secular State (Hardcover)
Donald Eugene Smith
R4,460 Discovery Miles 44 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Throughout India's history, religion has been the most powerful single factor in the development of her civilization. Today, despite her religious tradition, India is emerging as a secular state. In this book, Donald E. Smith explores the origin of the concept of secularization as it is found both in Indian culture and in the example of the western nations. He emphasizes the important role of secularization in India's total democratic experiment and points out that the degree of its realization will undoubtedly affect the eventual character of democracy in India. In addition, the success or failure of the secular state in India cannot fail to influence the attitudes of her neighbors. Professor Smith considers the many aspects and implications of India's attempt to secularize her government. Originally published in 1963.
