A raiz de que el huracan "Wilma" impactara Cancun, en octubre de 2005, y ocasionara perdidas millonarias en la infraestructura hotelera, pero sobre todo afectara drasticamente las playas, surge la inquietud de investigar las causas que originaron los devastadores efectos provocados por este fenomeno. Desde la decada de los 60's muchos paises, entre ellos Mexico, apostaron su futuro economico a impulsar el crecimiento del sector turistico. Con esta perspectiva y analizando diversos factores, inferimos que la destruccion podria considerarse como un efecto secundario de un desarrollo turistico cuyos danos ambientales no fueron considerados a detalle y, en ese marco, se dio una acelerada e intensa construccion de hoteles sobre las dunas y a escasos 30 metros del pleamar, ocasionando con ello la perdida de arenales costeros. Es por ello que la teoria del "Turismo Auto-destructivo" pareciera relatar la historia de este balneario. El proverbio: "El turismo es como fuego: se le puede usar para cocinar la sopa, pero tambien puede quemar la casa," queda como anillo al dedo.
