This book presents an accurate narrative of some of the principal
events in Egypt and Sudan since the year 1876. It explains the
effects of the British occupation on Egypt, the chief point of
interest in the Egyptian reform, and the difficulty of ascertaining
Eastern opinion on Egypt.
This book publishes some leading European contributors to the early
formation of historical and social science analysis of the orient.
It focuses on those authors who have shaped the modern debate on
orientalism, especially on Islam, the Middle-East and orientalism
in the twentieth centuries.
Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer (1841 1917), was a British
statesman and colonial administrator. After a successful career in
the War Office he was appointed the Controller General of Egypt in
1879. After the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War, Baring became Consul
General of Egypt, a position he held until his resignation in 1907.
Modern Egypt, published in 1908 and revised in 1910, can be
regarded as his justification for his actions in Egypt, and has
been described as 'one of the classic works of Victorian
imperialist writing'. It explains why Britain became involved in
Egypt, when the collapse of the economy threatened the political
stability of the region. Subsequently Britain and France took dual
control, to keep Ottoman Turkey out, and to protect access to the
Suez Canal. Cromer was an influential player in the events he
describes, and, allowing for bias, the book remains a valuable
record.

the War Office he was appointed the Controller General of Egypt in
1879. After the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War, Baring became Consul
General of Egypt, a position he held until 1907 when he resigned
due to ill health. During his retirement, he maintained his
interest in politics and contemporary culture. This volume, first
published in 1913, contains a collection of articles written for
magazines such as the Edinburgh Review and the Spectator between
1908 and 1913, on the topics of contemporary politics and literary
culture. Baring discusses various subjects including Army reform,
the contemporary systems of colonial government, and the future of
Classics in education and historiography. This volume provides
information on Edwardian views of imperialism, and also illustrates
the types of popular articles which were published during this
period.
