While serving as president of the Jesuit-run University of Central America in the midst of El Salvador's brutal civil war, Ellacuria was also a prolific writer. His advocacy on behalf of the country's persecuted majority provoked the enmity of the Salvadoran political establishment. On November 16, 1989, members of the Salvadoran military entered the university's campus and murdered Ellacuria, along with five other Jesuit priests and two women. Kevin F. Burke, SJ, shows why Ellacuria is significant not only as a martyr but also as a theologian. Ellacuria effectively integrated philosophy, history, anthropology, and sociopolitical analysis into his theological reflections on salvation, spirituality, and the church to create an original contribution to liberation theology. Ellacuria's writings directly address one of the most vexing issues in theology today: can theologians account for the demands arising from both the particularity of their various social-historical situations and also the universal claims of Christian revelation? Burke explains how Ellacuria bases theology in a philosophy of historical reality -- the "ground beneath the cross" -- and interprets the suffering of "the crucified peoples" in the light of Jesus' crucifixion. Ellacuria thus inserts the theological realities of salvation and transcendence squarely within the course of human events, and he connects these to the Christian mandate to "take the crucified peoples down from their crosses." The 'global rise of judicial powe' has been called one of the most significant developments in late twentieth and early twenty-first century politics. In this book, Jeb Barnes and Thomas F. Burke examine the political consequences of the growing reliance on courts and litigation in public policy by analyzing the field of injury compensation, in which judicialized and bureaucratized programs operate side-by-side. Their study mixes quantitative data on a wide range of injury compensation policies with three in-depth case historical studies in which they trace political struggles over Social Security Disability Insurance, asbestos injury litigation, and the obscure but fascinating controversy over injuries purportedly caused by vaccines. They conclude that while social insurance programs that compensate for injury tend to bring social interests together, the use of litigation divides interests between victims and villains, winners and losers and so creates a comparatively fractious, chaotic politics.
Are there other planetary systems like ours? Other planets like ours? Is there life elsewhere in the Universe?' So asks Dr. Lew Allen Jr. in the Foreword. In December of 1992, theorists, observers, and instrument builders gathered at the California Institute of Technology to discuss the search for answers to these questions. The International Conference, entitled Planetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection' and supported through NASA's newly formed TOPS (Toward Other Planetary Systems) program, was the first of a series of conferences uniting researchers across disciplines and political boundaries to share thoughts and information on planetary systems. The conference was sponsored by NASA, hosted by JPL at Caltech, and endorsed by the 1992 International Space Year Association. These proceedings include discussions of topics ranging from stellar, disk, and planetary formation to new ways of searching for other stellar systems containing planets. The authors represent a wide range of nationalities, disciplines, and points of view. The second international conference took place in December of 1993.
Selenium plays a fascinating and still poorly understood role in the function of living cells and therefore in human health. juxtapose imagery depicting sacred themes with likenesses of the
crudest and basest nature. This book examines such contrasts in six
major works of pre-1350 Spanish literature, arguing that medieval
writers and artists subscribed to the classical belief that one
must introduce the contrary of a concept in order to elucidate it
fully. To explain this play of opposites, the author draws on the
contrast between Bakhtin's concept of the carnivalesque, which
embodies and portrays the realm of desire, and the domain of the
law, which imposes the social and behavioral restraints upon which
civilized conduct is based.
