Move over James Bond; meet Captain Peterson Smith, formerly of the
US Navy. Smith is the son of a famous senator. He's a former US
Navy SEAL, an F-14 pilot, and an intelligence specialist-all
without breaking a sweat. He even makes time to have coffee with
his mother. Yes, Smith is the perfect soldier and perfect son ...
and the only person on earth who can save the world from mass
destruction. Follow Captain Smith through three separate vignettes
into the brave world of minisubs in Sweden. We first meet the
honorable Smith in "Minisub 83," as the captain leaves his American
home to serve in the Royal Swedish Navy. There's no time to
acclimate, however; he must use specially designed weapons against
an evil foe. In "Minisub 99," Smith must find a way to destroy
wicked Dr. Dimitriov's underwater headquarters. If Dimitriov
succeeds, he could blow the planet to smithereens But of course
Captain Smith has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Finally, in
the rousing, rampant "Minisub 2010," the notorious Wizardess has
plans for global domination by mining gold from the Martian
surface. Can she be stopped? It's all up to Peterson Smith.
In recent years, the field of psychology has seen an increasing
interest in the aftereffects of psychological trauma. Work has been
published that examines the psychological sequelae of rape, incest,
combat, natural disaster, fire, and, in a few cases,
hostage-taking. This is the first book that takes a long-term
perspective, by asking questions such as: How did survivors view
their experience through the lens of time? Were there any positive
effects associated with the experience? The author examines how
hostage victims perceive their victimization, and how they go about
the task of rebuilding their assumptive world. In sharing the
intimate details of this process, the hostage survivors have
allowed us to be close observers in their efforts to redefine their
world and themselves. They have served to expose the internal and
external forces that have helped or hindered their efforts. It is
important for those in human services, as well as management in
higher-risk professions, to understand the trauma from the
survivors' perspective. They need to know what is helpful to
survivors and what is not. Common sense assumptions of those in
authority are often wrong. Moreover, the initial post-release shock
and the overwhelming press of emotions and events make it difficult
for survivors to discern and express their genuine needs. The
passage of time can help to distill and organize thoughts and
feelings. In deepening our understanding of the needs of victims,
this study has enhanced our ability to be of service.
Now in its third edition, Cost-Benefit Analysis has been updated,
offering readers the perfect introduction to project, programme and
policy appraisal using basic tools of financial and economic
analysis. The key economic questions of any social cost-benefit
analysis are: do the benefits of the project or policy exceed the
costs, no matter how widely costs and benefits are spread, and
irrespective of whether or not project impacts, such as
environmental effects, are reflected in market prices? And which
group or groups of individuals receive the benefits and which bear
the costs? This book addresses these questions with an emphasis on
putting the theory presented in the book into practice. This third
edition has several attractive features: Readers are encouraged to
develop their own skills by applying the tools and techniques of
cost-benefit analysis to case studies and examples, including an
analysis of a project which is developed throughout the book. The
book emphasizes the use of spreadsheets which are invaluable in
providing a framework for the cost-benefit analysis. A dedicated
chapter provides guidance for writing up a report which summarises
the analysis which has been undertaken. New pedagogical features,
including Technical Notes and Examples, have been added as an aid
to readers throughout the text. An appendix provides 14 additional
case studies which can be developed in class or as assignment
projects. Additional material for instructors and students is
provided through Support Material maintained by Routledge. This
updated edition is an ideal text for a course on cost-benefit
analysis where the emphasis is on practical application of
principles and equipping students to conduct appraisals. It is also
a useful handbook for professionals looking for a logical framework
in which to undertake their cost-benefit analysis work.
"Presenting a cartographic journey into the world of the
production(s) of disability, this book examines embodiment,
transhumanism, subjectivity, technology and jurisprudence. It
concerns matters of order/disorder and the normal and pathological,
and explores the way stories about wholeness, health, enhancement
and perfection are told"--Provided by publisher.

Continuing Perspectives on the Black Diaspora is a response to a
1990 publication that studied the persistence and resilience of
black (African) diasporic populations in the Caribbean, Latin
America, North America, and the United Kingdom. In that book, the
authors used the themes of persistence and resilience to
interrogate the social processes and the coping repertoire of these
diasporic populations. This volume investigates the
often-overlooked African presence in Asia. Researchers sought to
determine how many of these diasporic populations have fared in the
context of political independence, globalization / economic
marginalization, and the presence of ethnic conflict and
institutional racism, even with positive class formations and
declining significance of race in other geographical areas.
Prescriptions for the continued viability of these diasporic
populations are provided. India and China are undergoing a global
renaissance, emerging as potentially significant economic,
political, and cultural actors on the world scene. Meanwhile,
ancestral Africa is still socially, politically, and economically
fragmented, thereby causing a new migratory "push" to North America
and Europe.
Nearly a century ago, it was predicted that Kula, the exchange of
shell valuables in the Massim region of Papua New Guinea, would
disappear. Not only has this prophecy failed to come true, but
today Kula is expanding beyond these island communities to the
mainland and Australia. This book unveils the many deep motivations
and meanings that lie behind the pursuit of Kula. Focusing upon the
visually stimulating carved and painted prow boards that decorate
canoes used by the Kula voyagers, Campbell argues that these
designs comprise layers of encoded meaning. The unique colour
associations and other formal elements speak to Vakutans about key
emotional issues within their everyday and spiritual lives. How is
mens participation in the Kula linked to their desire to achieve
immortality? How do the messages conveyed by the canoe boards
converge with those presented in Kula myths and rituals? In what
ways do these systems of meaning reveal a male ideology that
competes with the prevailing female ideology? Providing an
alternative way of understanding the significance of Kula in the
Trobriand Islands, "The Art of Kula" makes an influential new
contribution to the ethnography of Papua New Guinea.

When Tony Campbell, aged 75, asked the Council of Jesuit
Theological College for Emeritus status and retirement from JTC,
both were granted most graciously, along with a testimonial
document which said in part: 'His teaching has combined evocation
and provocation in the best sense of those terms. He has mentored
research students with scholarly exactitude and personal care. He
has published books of the highest scholarly quality, of engaging
readability, and of passionate conviction.' When we at ATF were
considering asking him for a volume of Collected Works or Selected
Writings, we were well aware that 'published books of the highest
scholarly quality' were likely to be found on the shelves of
libraries and of specialised academics, but not with students and
others generally interested. There may be a dozen or more of Tony's
books on the list from Amazon.com booksellers, along with another
two or three that are not listed there. But most are heavy-duty
specialist works, not easily accessible even to the educated
public. We were equally well aware that there was a surprising
number of essays and articles scattered in journals and proceedings
of conferences that were, because of the scattering, often just as
inaccessible. We thought that a collection of these in a single
volume would be of great value to those interested. In the
Introduction to this volume, Father Campbell has gone into some
detail about the contents. Suffice for us to say that Job and the
issues associated with suffering concern us all, that the interplay
of history and narrative is a constant in the understanding of much
biblical text, and that the nature of the Bible and its role in our
lives is a major concern for most thinking Christians. While Father
Campbell's focus is on the Older Testament, pondering what he looks
at throws light on much of the Newer Testament as well. The
writings Tony Campbell has pulled together in this single volume
address significant issues within the readable length of an article
or a talk. Addressed originally to thinking people, we at ATF
believe they are likely to be of interest to a wide audience.
This book aims to enable a user to become closely familiar with a
limited number of Older Testament texts and so be in a position to
form judgments about them and, resulting from that, to have an
under- standing of the nature of biblical text itself. Beyond this,
the reality that these are key texts for the understanding of the
Bible means that they have fundamental impact for the basics of
faith todayuour understanding of ourselves before God, essential to
faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Israel's prophets reflect on the role of God in human life; faith
in God's love, God's passion for justice, the essential place of
fidelity in faith. Israel's foundational narratives explore the
nature of human lives before God; they include issues such as
creation, human freedom, and faith in God's unshakeable commitment
to human life. Alongside these concerns, there is the importance of
getting a feel for the nature of scripture.
Self-help is big business, but alas, not always a scientific one.
Self-help books, websites, and movies abound and are important
sources of psychological advice for millions of Americans. But how
can you sift through them to find the ones that work?
Self-Help That Works is an indispensable guide that enables readers
to identify effective self-help materials and distinguish them from
those that are potentially misleading or even harmful. Six
scientist-practitioners bring careful research, expertise, and a
dozen national studies to the task of choosing and recommending
self-help resources.
Designed for both laypersons and mental-health professionals, this
book critically reviews multiple types of self-help resources, from
books and autobiographies to films, online programs, support
groups, and websites, for 41 different behavioral disorders and
life challenges. The revised edition of this award-winning book now
features online self-help resources, expanded content, and new
chapters focusing on autism, bullying, chronic pain, GLB issues,
happiness, and nonchemical addictions. Each chapter updates the
self-help resources launched since the previous edition and expands
the material. The final chapters provide key strategies for
consumers evaluating self-help as well as for professionals
integrating self-help into treatment.
All told, this updated edition of Self-Help that Works evaluates
more than 2,000 self-help resources and brings together the
collective wisdom of nearly 5,000 mental health professionals.
Whether seeking self-help for yourself, loved ones, or patients,
this is the go-to, research-based guide with the best advice on
what works.
From an accomplished pastor and writer, this eighth and final
book in the best-selling Preach for a Year series provides the busy
pastor with two practical and easy-to-use outlines for every Sunday
of the year. All outlines are structured in three sections--an
introduction, which provides attention-getting thoughts for sermon
starters; a body, with several points of biblical exposition; and a
conclusion, which suggests practical questions and devotional
thoughts for application. A complete Scripture index rounds out
this comprehensive resource.
These outlines provide structure for pastors' study and
preaching, to which they can add their own style and material to
build weekly sermons.
