In June 11-12, 2010 a workshop entitled 'Optimization and Data Analysis in Biomedical Informatics' was organized at The Fields Institute. Following this event invited contributions were gathered based on the talks presented at the workshop, and additional invited chapters were chosen from world's leading experts. In this publication, the authors share their expertise in the form of state-of-the-art research and review chapters, bringing together researchers from different disciplines and emphasizing the value of mathematical methods in the areas of clinical sciences. This work is targeted to applied mathematicians, computer scientists, industrial engineers, and clinical scientists who are interested in exploring emerging and fascinating interdisciplinary topics of research. It is designed to further stimulate and enhance fruitful collaborations between scientists from different disciplines.

Inverse problems and optimal design have come of age as a consequence of the availability of better, more accurate, and more efficient simulation packages. Many of these simulators, which can run on small workstations, can capture the complicated behavior of the physical systems they are modeling, and have become commonplace tools in engineering and science. There is a great desire to use them as part of a process by which measured field data are analyzed or by which design of a product is automated. A major obstacle in doing precisely this is that one is ultimately confronted with a large-scale optimization problem. This volume contains expository articles on both inverse problems and design problems formulated as optimization. Each paper describes the physical problem in some detail and is meant to be accessible to researchers in optimization as well as those who work in applied areas where optimization is a key tool. What emerges in the presentations is that there are features about the problem that must be taken into account in posing the objective function, and in choosing an optimization strategy. In particular there are certain structures peculiar to the problems that deserve special treatment, and there is ample opportunity for parallel computation. We go through life's daily obstacles encouraging ourselves to Run the Race set before us as Bold Warriors for our Father. God places people across our path at the right time and the right setting to bring forth Good Fruit and to give us Favor like Jacob David in the Bible composed Beautiful Psalms of Praise. As a small child I have always been fascinated with the Book of Psalms which David wrote which is pure Encouragement In my book Anointed Spoken Word, it is encouraging, motivational, Anointed Spiritual Poetry at its' Finest. In Joel Chapter 2 verse 28-29. "And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. I will pour out My Spirit in those days." Cedric F. Coleman is a young man who grew up in a small town Lumberton, North Carolina and attended United Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church under Pastor Lorrick and the late Deacon Lorrick. He has served eight years in the U.S Army as a Sergeant and is currently overseas as a DOD civilian in Afghanistan. He attended the University of North Carolina at Fayetteville State while majoring in Psychology. Cedric is a Positive young man who Loves God and has been a Leader in Foreign and Domestic duties. He is currently working with a friend Marko Hamlin who has Inspired him to establish an outreach Ministry program in the near future.

The book describes the discovery of a scientific theory for fireball objects seen in the sky including ball lightning and a type of UFO. For centuries these lights have been seen without a satisfactory explanation. Ball lightning is part of that mystery but easily explained by Coleman's vortex fireball theory which hypothesizes the existence of aerial burners in the sky. The theory suggests vortices can combust a fuel within the confines of vortex breakdown of a vortex. This idea was published by the author in scientific sources and has been demonstrated experimentally at a University facility. This could be the definitive solution. Observations are cited from the literature that show that such a previously unrecognised scientific phenomenon does exist. This unified theory clarifies other puzzles such as the Tunguska "meteor" and gives a coherent explanation of ball lightning as a small fiery vortex.
The calculation of partial derivatives is a fundamental need in scientific computing. Automatic differentiation (AD) can be applied straightforwardly to obtain all necessary partial derivatives (usually first and, possibly, second derivatives) regardless of a code's complexity. However, the space and time efficiency of AD can be dramatically improved - sometimes transforming a problem from intractable to highly feasible - if inherent problem structure is used to apply AD in a judicious manner. This book discusses the efficient use of AD to solve real problems, especially multidimensional zero-finding and optimization, in the MATLAB environment. This book is concerned with the determination of the first and second derivatives in the context of solving scientific computing problems with an emphasis on optimization and solutions to nonlinear systems. The authors focus on the application rather than the implementation of AD, solve real nonlinear problems with high performance by exploiting the problem structure in the application of AD, and provide many easy to understand applications, examples, and MATLAB templates.
