This book provides an overview of the Maryland militia in the
Revolutionary War and a compilation of the names of the officers
and men from surviving records. It describes events and major
aspects of the militia, with over 15,000 men, most of whom did not
This work contains Alexandria Quaker records, 1802-1827 (minutes,
certificates of removal, marriages, births, deaths); extracts from
the Vestry Book of Christ Church Fairfax, 1765-1806 with burial
plot owners in 1812; burial permits, 1787-1795 (support payments,
apprenticeship of orphans, pew owners); extracts from Truro Parish
Vestry Book, 1732-1765 with references to orphans and burials (from
which you can estimate the year of death), the needy for whom
payments were made, and other payments; and the register of
baptisms, marriages and funerals during the ministry of Rev. James
Muir, 1802-1815 at Presbyterian Church of Alexandria.
There are a remarkable number of relationships revealed in these
transactions. Included in the compilations are landmarks and all
references to persons and relationships.
This volume contains genealogical extracts from Portrait and
Biographical Record of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The original
contained portraits of citizens of the past and present, together
with portraits and biographies of the presidents of the United
States, published by Chapman Publishing Company, New York and
Chicago, 1898. Information was gathered by a corps of writers who
interviewed the subjects of the biographies. "In attempting to
reduce the size of this material I the editor] have eliminated as
much unnecessary wording as possible. The original contains much in
the way of aggrandizing the accomplishments of the individual. I
the editor] have tried to remove this while retaining some of the
unique events and characterizations...." This book includes 775
biographies; with over 11,000 names. Many biographies describe
several generations, often back to the emigrant ancestor. "No
genealogical data or family relationships have been omitted from
the original." An every-name index adds to the value of this work.
