This volume contains genealogical extracts from Portrait and
Biographical Record of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The original
contained portraits of citizens of the past and present, together
with portraits and biographies of the presidents of the United
States, published by Chapman Publishing Company, New York and
Chicago, 1898. Information was gathered by a corps of writers who
interviewed the subjects of the biographies. "In attempting to
reduce the size of this material I the editor] have eliminated as
much unnecessary wording as possible. The original contains much in
the way of aggrandizing the accomplishments of the individual. I
the editor] have tried to remove this while retaining some of the
unique events and characterizations...." This book includes 775
biographies; with over 11,000 names. Many biographies describe
several generations, often back to the emigrant ancestor. "No
genealogical data or family relationships have been omitted from
the original." An every-name index adds to the value of this work.
