Professor Franklin Hiram King made important contributions in soil
science -- soil physics and soil fertility in particular. This
book, perhaps the first on sustainable organic agriculture, is of
great interest today, when we are able to assess the truth of what
King stated a hundred years ago. This edition is complete and
unabridged.
We in North America are wont to think that we may instruct all the
world in agriculture, because our agricultural wealth is great and
our exports to less favored peoples have been heavy; but this
wealth is great because our soil is fertile and new, and in large
acreage for every person. We have really only begun to farm well.
The first condition of farming is to maintain fertility. This
condition the oriental peoples have met, and they have solved it in
their way. We may never adopt particular methods, but we can profit
vastly by their experience. With the increase of personal wants in
recent time, the newer countries may never reach such density of
population as have Japan and China; but we must nevertheless learn
the first lesson in the conservation of natural resources, which
are the resources of the land. [From the Forward] Get Your Copy

In 1909, American agronomist F.H. King toured China, Korea and
Japan, studying traditional fertilization, tillage and general
farming practices. He wrote his observations and findings in
Farmers of Forty Centuries, Or Permanent Agriculture in China,
Korea, and Japan (1911, published shortly after his death by his
wife, Carrie Baker King). King lived in an era preceding synthetic
nitrogen fertilizer production and before the use of the internal
combustion engine for farm machinery, yet he was profoundly
interested in the challenge of farming the same soils in a
'permanent' manner, hence his interest in the agricultural
practices of ancient cultures.
Originally published in 1911, this early works is a detailed
examination of the practical aspects of agriculture with much of
the information still useful and practical today. Many of the
earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and
before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are
republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality,
modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
