The psychological syndrome of learned helplessness is a uniquely modern phenomenon, and has been applied to a variety of human problems such as inappropriate passivity or demoralization. The "men who stared at goats" in the U.S. Army in the 1970s were trying to pull ahead of Soviet psychic research initiatives, many of which are described in this unique volume.
