Machiavelli in Contemporary Media (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Andrea Polegato, Fabio Benincasa Machiavelli in Contemporary Media (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Andrea Polegato, Fabio Benincasa
R3,092 Discovery Miles 30 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is an undeniable and persisting fascination with Niccolo Machiavelli and his infamous political theories in contemporary pop culture. Many comic books, video games, TV series, movies, and graphic novels make explicit or implicit references to the most infamous political thinker of all-time. By offering the reader an idea of how Machiavelli is present and represented in contemporary media (in particular, in Assassin's Creed, House of Cards, Homeland, pop art, American and Italian politics, Italian cinema, and Trump's rise to power), Machiavelli in Contemporary Media gives new life to Machiavellian thought and shows how his theories-but also the several different interpretations of them (Machiavellianism)-are still influential today. Andrea Polegato is Assistant Professor in Italian Studies at California State University, Fresno, USA. He works on the political language of Niccolo Machiavelli and Florence between the Quattrocento and Cinquecento. His publications include articles on Machiavelli, Pietro Aretino, and the Italian filmmaker Ermanno Olmi. He is also working on a comparison between Renaissance Italy and Ancient China. Fabio Benincasa is Adjunct Professor for Duquesne University - Rome Campus and Universita Nicola Cusano, Italy. As well as several essays on cinema, he co-edited Come rovesciare il mondo ad arte (2015) with Giorgio de Finis and Andrea Facchi, and with de Finis Nome plurale di citta (2016), and Il mondo degli umani si e fermato (2020). He is editor of Frontiere della Psicoanalisi and has collaborated with the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome.

Ryan Calabretta-Sajder; Contributions by Virginia Agostinelli, Fabio Benincasa, Francesca D'Alessandro Behr, Daniela Bini, …
R3,107 Discovery Miles 31 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Noted as a 'civil poet' by Alberto Moravia, Pier Paolo Pasolini was a creative and philosophical genius whose works challenged generations of Western Europeans and Americans to reconsider not only issues regarding the self, but also various social concerns. Pasolini's works touched and continues to inspire students, scholars, and intellectuals alike to question the status quo. This collection of thirteen articles and two interviews evidences the on-going discourse around Pasolini's lasting impressions on the new generation. Pasolini's Lasting Impressions: Death, Eros and Literary Enterprise in the Opus of Pier Paolo Pasolini thus explores the civic poet's oeuvre in four parts: poetry, theatre, film, and culture. Although the collection does not include every genre in which Pasolini wrote, it addresses many, some which often receive little or no attention, particularly in Italian Studies of North America. The underlining theme of the book, 'death, eros and literary enterprise' intertwines these genres in a rather unique way, allowing for inter-disciplinary interpretations to Pasolini's rich opus. The edited volume concludes with two artists, Dacia Maraini and Ominio71's reflections on Pasolini in the 21st century. In fact, the cover represents a recent work on Ominio71 underscoring Pasolini's visual presence still within the Roman walls. In conclusion, this collection demonstrates how his works still influence contemporary Italian society and motivate intellectual dialogue through new theoretical outlooks on Pasolini's oeuvre.
