This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 25th European Conference on Information Retrieval Research, ECIR 2003, held in Pisa, Italy, in April 2003. The 31 revised full papers and 16 short papers presented together with two invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 101 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on IR and the Web; retrieval of structured documents; collaborative filtering and text mining; text representation and natural language processing; formal models and language models for IR; machine learning and IR; text categorization; usability, interactivity, and visualization; and architectural issues and efficiency.
This open access book provides an introduction and an overview of
learning to quantify (a.k.a. “quantificationâ€), i.e. the task
of training estimators of class proportions in unlabeled data by
means of supervised learning. In data science, learning to quantify
is a task of its own related to classification yet different from
it, since estimating class proportions by simply classifying all
data and counting the labels assigned by the classifier is known to
often return inaccurate (“biasedâ€) class proportion estimates.
The book introduces learning to quantify by looking at the
supervised learning methods that can be used to perform it, at the
evaluation measures and evaluation protocols that should be used
for evaluating the quality of the returned predictions, at the
numerous fields of human activity in which the use of
quantification techniques may provide improved results with respect
to the naive use of classification techniques, and at advanced
topics in quantification research. The book is suitable to
researchers, data scientists, or PhD students, who want to come up
to speed with the state of the art in learning to quantify, but
also to researchers wishing to apply data science technologies to
fields of human activity (e.g., the social sciences, political
science, epidemiology, market research) which focus on aggregate
(“macroâ€) data rather than on individual (“microâ€) data.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th
International Conference of the CLEF Association, CLEF 2022, held
in Bologna, Italy in September 2022.The conference has a clear
focus on experimental information retrieval with special attention
to the challenges of multimodality, multilinguality, and
interactive search ranging from unstructured to semi structures and
structured data. The 7 full papers presented together with 3 short
papers in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 14
submissions. This year, the contributions addressed the following
challenges: authorship attribution, fake news detection and news
tracking, noise-detection in automatically transferred relevance
judgments, impact of online education on children's conversational
search behavior, analysis of multi-modal social media content,
knowledge graphs for sensitivity identification, a fusion of deep
learning and logic rules for sentiment analysis, medical concept
normalization and domain-specific information extraction. In
addition to this, the volume presents 7 "best of the labs" papers
which were reviewed as full paper submissions with the same review
criteria. 14 lab overview papers were accepted and represent
scientific challenges based on new datasets and real world problems
in multimodal and multilingual information access.

This two-volume set LNCS 12656 and 12657 constitutes the refereed
proceedings of the 43rd European Conference on IR Research, ECIR
2021, held virtually in March/April 2021, due to the COVID-19
pandemic. The 50 full papers presented together with 11
reproducibility papers, 39 short papers, 15 demonstration papers,
12 CLEF lab descriptions papers, 5 doctoral consortium papers, 5
workshop abstracts, and 8 tutorials abstracts were carefully
reviewed and selected from 436 submissions. The accepted
contributions cover the state of the art in IR: deep learning-based
information retrieval techniques, use of entities and knowledge
graphs, recommender systems, retrieval methods, information
extraction, question answering, topic and prediction models,
multimedia retrieval, and much more.
