A rare gem of the mystery genre makes its first return to print
since 1956
An honest policeman, Sergeant Wigan, escorts a drunk man home one night
to keep him out of trouble and, seeing his fine book collection, slowly
falls in to the gentle art of book collecting. Just as the friendship
is blossoming, the policeman's book-collecting friend is murdered.
To solve the mystery of why the victim was killed, and which of his
rare books was taken, Wigan dives into the world of 'runners' and book
collectors, where avid agents will gladly cut you for a first edition
and then offer you a lift home afterwards. This adventurous mystery,
which combines exuberant characters with a wonderfully realised
depiction of the second-hand book market, is sure to delight
bibliophiles and classic crime enthusiasts alike.
The stories of the planet's oldest trees and what they have meant
to human beings. Humans have always revered long-lived trees. But
as historian Jared Farmer reveals in Elderflora, our veneration
took a modern turn in the eighteenth century when naturalists
embarked on a quest to locate and precisely date the oldest living
things on earth. The new science of tree time prompted travellers
to visit ancient specimens and conservationists to protect sacred
groves. Exploitation accompanied sanctification, as old-growth
forests succumbed to imperial expansion and the industrial
revolution. Taking us from Lebanon to New Zealand to California,
Farmer surveys the complex history of the world's oldest trees,
including voices of Indigenous peoples, religious figures, and
contemporary scientists who study elderflora in crisis. In a
changing climate, a long future is still possible, Farmer shows,
but only if we give care to young things that might grow old.
Combining rigorous scholarship with lyrical writing, Elderflora
chronicles the complex roles ancient trees have played in the
modern world and illuminates how we might need old trees now more
than ever.

pronounces Mickey and his friends new members of the Legion of
Musketeers and assigns them the job. But his wicked plan backfires
when the unlikely heroes end up saving the day.
Get to know the icky but important SLIME that keeps nature running!
It's time to show SLIME some LOVE! This book is an icky, sticky
celebration of the incredible work slime does all day long. Slime
is a shield, a weapon, a climate protector, a nursery and lots of
fun, too. Icky World takes a look at the science of the messiest
parts of nature and reminds us all to protect these icky but
important bits of our precious planet. Each book has been reviewed
and endorsed by an expert in the relevant branch of science and
supports curriculum learning in the areas of science and ecology
for ages 6 and up. In praise of Icky World: We Need SLIME! "Can a
book on slime be delightful? This one is: delightfully gross, icky
and disgusting but also informative, hands-on and a joy to read.
This is the perfect gift for kids who want to know more, look
deeper - and keep the whole family entertained. I loved it."

Get to know the icky but important POO that keeps nature running!
It's time to show POO some LOVE! This book is an icky, stinky
celebration of the incredible work poo does all day long. Poo is a
home, a defence, a nursery, a seed-sower and lots of laughs, too.

praise of Icky World: We Need POO! "If children can learn to be
curious (as well as careful!) about poo, they might just grow up to
be scientists who will help us turn billions of tonnes of stinky
waste into a source of life. Addy Farmer has written an
entertaining and informative book about poo that every kid (and
their parents!) should read. Learning more about poo, and thinking
about it in different ways, might help us recreate a green,
renewable Earth. Wash your hands. Read on. As Ms Farmer says: Poo
is power! People and other animals poop out billions of tonnes of
valuable resources every year. What a waste! In nature, poo is a
way for plants and animals to help each other live and grow. It's a
language of conversation among all living things. If we can learn
from other animals, poo can be used to enrich the soil, grow food,
give us renewable energy, and keep our drinking water clean." David
