Astronaut and test pilot Steve Austin (Lee Majors) is involved in a plane crash that leaves him with severe injuries and on the brink of death. Fortunately for him, the government believe they have the technology to rebuild him from experimental parts. Dr Rudy Wells (Alan Oppenheimer) duly sets about equipping the stricken Austin with nuclear-powered bionic limbs and implants, giving him unnatural speed and strength. To repay the government for their help, Steve joins the Office of Scientific Investigation, overseen by Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson), and uses his new powers to help fight crime, espionage and other threats to the nation's peace and stability.

Research scientists Adam (Kirk Douglas) and Alex (Farrah Fawcett) enjoy an idyllic existence on a remote space station until they are joined by inventor Benson (Harvey Keitel).
