Luke gets to help set-up the legendary Pony Express! In 1860,
getting from Missouri to California on the West Coast took a long,
long time - not to mention a certain degree of courage. Annoyed at
the delay in communication, the federal government offers a grant
to whoever can solve the problem and set-up a fast, reliable mail
system linking East and West. In response, entrepreneur W.H.
Russell founds the Pony Express company: fearless men riding day
and night, changing horses at way stations. But not everyone likes
that idea...The 46th adventure of Lucky Luke, and the Old West at
its funniest!
Arriving at the town of Fort Smith with a prisoner, Lucky Luke is
surprised to find a place in turmoil and a thoroughly annoyed
sheriff. Belle Starr, a rich ranch owner, keeps posting bail for
every bandit arrested in town, with the complicity of a corrupt
judge, before recruiting them in her own gang and carrying out
various attacks and robberies. Unfortunately, she is also such a
pillar of the community that no one believes she could possibly be
guilty...
When oil suddenly gushes from the ground in Whitney, it makes
prospectors very happy, but not the inhabitants, for a pestilential
smell soon covers the small town. Abandoning her home, Whitney's
elder Miss Bluemarket moves to Smithville with her three pets -
three adult buffaloes. Her search for a new home makes her easy
prey for unscrupulous estate agents, and soon she finds herself
owning a property whose mere name has the locals shaking in their
boots: the Bates ranch...
After a fellow inmate, having received a blow to the head, forgets
his own name and is freed as a brand new man, the Daltons start
pretending to be amnesiac in order to escape the prison. So as to
test their supposed amnesia - and hopefully allow them to retrieve
their memories should it be real - they are put in familiar
situations: bank hold-ups, train robberies - under Lucky Luke's
supervision, of course.
Samuel Parker, ageing sheriff of Hadley City, is about to get
married, and he's promised his bride to retire after the ceremony.
But Parker once sent the Daltons to jail, and when the horrible
brothers hear the happy news, they escape with the intent of
killing Samuel right in the middle of his wedding. Fortunately,
Lucky Luke is an old friend of the sheriff's, and he has been
invited to the celebrations...
Horace Greeley is heading west with his printing press and his
rock-solid belief in the power of the press, printing issues of his
DailyStar as he goes. But his insistence on publishing the truth
isn't making him universally loved. When Lucky Luke meets the
quirky journalist, he agrees to help him settle in Dead End
Gulch-and protect him against those who would rather not see their
dirty deeds in print.
Sensational news in the United States: the great actress Sarah
Bernhardt is coming from France for a grand tour across the
continent. The world of show business is in effervescence but some,
such as the League of Virtue, are opposed to the tragedian's
coming, because of her sulphurous reputation. President Rutherford
B. Hayes, a theatre-lover, asks Lucky Luke to look after the lady,
ambassador of French culture and charm...
In a fort on the Frontier, the 7th Cavalry keeps a vigilant watch
over the Wild West. It is a time of peace with the local Natives,
and all is well, thanks - at least in the colonel's mind - to the
regiment's lucky mascot. But when that dog mysteriously vanishes
and bad luck begins to plague the unit, it becomes necessary to
find a replacement. The colonel picks Rin Tin Can for the job...
and then the real trouble begins!
In 1874, President Grant authorises the construction of a bridge
over the Mississippi. Until then, passage between St. Louis and
East St. Louis was only possible on ferries. But the ferry company
is owned by two brothers who have been getting rich by forcing
passengers to wait in the hotels and restaurants they own on both
sides of the river. The two crooks are doing everything in their
power to prevent the bridge from being built - until Lucky Luke
arrives, of course...
Everyone's heard of the Gunfight at O.K. Corral: the most famous
shootout of the Old West, between the Earp brothers and Doc
Holliday on the side of law and order, and the Clanton brothers and
their gang. A legend told many times in books and films, in
sometimes contradictory versions... Fortunately, here is the
definitive version at last, restoring the unvarnished truth of what
is another triumph of... Lucky Luke!
