Colostrum, the first lacteal secretion in all mammals, is not only
a good source of nutrients, but also contains many biologically
active substances which play an important role in the protection
and development of the newborn. However, colostrum composition and
quality are affected by many factors including the preservation
methods. It is useful to establish a colostrum bank to be used for
newborn calves that cannot be fed by their own mother immediately
after birth. Moreover, the bank can be used for preparation of
colostral based products for the prevention and, to some extent,
for the treatment of specified human diseases. This book aims to
follow the changes in colostrum properties, colostrum preservation
as well as evaluation of the safety of long-term colostrums
consumption.
