Testing of Metals for Structures - Proceedings of the International RILEM Workshop (Hardcover): Federico Mazzolani Testing of Metals for Structures - Proceedings of the International RILEM Workshop (Hardcover)
Federico Mazzolani
R9,479 Discovery Miles 94 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With current moves towards international harmonization, there is a need for rationalization and standardization of test procedures and interpretation of test results in many fields. Testing of metals for use in structures, particularly steel and aluminium, is a subject where information on these aspects is generally lacking. In response to this, RILEM (The International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures) organized an international workshop to identify "need in testing metals". Invited experts from Europe, Japan and the USA have contributed papers not only on experimental procedures for testing metallic materials, joints and structural components, but also on analytical models for interpreting their behaviour and for use in calculations. The papers brought together in this book provide reviews of the current situation and signposts for future research and development needs. In response to the recommendations of the workshop, RILEM is setting up new international committees and initiatives on the behaviour of joints, high cycle fatigue, non-destructive testing, structural imperfections, composite and thin-walled structures. This book should be va

Moment Resistant Connections of Steel Frames in Seismic Areas - Design and Reliability (Paperback): Federico Mazzolani Moment Resistant Connections of Steel Frames in Seismic Areas - Design and Reliability (Paperback)
Federico Mazzolani
R1,936 Discovery Miles 19 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An unexpected brittle failure of connections and of members occurred during the last earthquakes of Northridge and Kobe. For this reason a heightened awareness developed in the international scientific community, particularly in the earthquake prone countries of the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe, of the urgent need to investigate this topic. The contents of this volume result from a European project dealing with the 'Reliability of moment resistant connections of steel frames in seismic areas' (RECOS), developed between 1997 and 1999 within the INCO-Copernicus joint research projects of the 4th Framework Program. The 30 month project focused on five key areas: *Analysis and syntheses of research results, including code provisos, in relation with the evidence of the Northridge and Kobe earthquakes; *Identification and evaluation through experimental means of the structural performance of beam-to-column connections under cyclic loading; *Setting up of sophisticated models for interpreting the connection response; *Numerical study on the connection influence on the seismic response of steel buildings; *Assessment of new criteria for selecting the behaviour factor for different structural schemes and definition of the corresponding range of validity in relation of the connection typologies.

Earthquake Engineering for Structural Design (Paperback): Victor Gioncu, Federico Mazzolani Earthquake Engineering for Structural Design (Paperback)
Victor Gioncu, Federico Mazzolani
R2,165 Discovery Miles 21 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Developments in Earthquake Engineering have focussed on the capacity and response of structures. They often overlook the importance of seismological knowledge to earthquake-proofing of design. It is not enough only to understand the anatomy of the structure, you must also appreciate the nature of the likely earthquake. Seismic design, as detailed in this book, is the bringing together of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. It focuses on the seismological aspects of design - analyzing various types of earthquake and how they affect structures differently. Understanding the distinction between these earthquake types and their different impacts on buildings can make the difference between whether a building stands or falls, or at least to how much it costs to repair. Covering the basis and basics of the major international codes, this is the essential guide for professionals working on structures in earthquake zones around the world.
