This book focuses on the vegetation history of the cultural landscape in southwestern Slovakia, which was established and adopted by mankind and has since constantly evolved in response to ongoing changes (in environmental conditions, biodiversity, land use, etc.). The book analyses four dominant ecosystems typical for the cultural landscape and affected by humans: woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and agricultural land. Each ecosystem is discussed in separate chapters. The chapters include (a) basic information, general aspects, development processes, trends and interpretations, (b) a published or non-published case study based on the author's own research, and (c) an extensive bibliography. A set of maps on the vegetation history and indices of geographical names and plants names serve to round out the coverage. The work provides an essential point of departure for describing the typical regional characteristics of the cultural landscape, with an eye to its future preservatio n.

Hermeneutics was elaborated as a specific art of understanding in humanities. The discovered paradigmatic, historical characteristics of scientific knowledge, and the role of rhetoric, interpretation and contextuality enabled us to use similar arguments in natural sciences too. In this way a new research field, the hermeneutics of science emerged based upon the works of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger and Gadamer. A dialogue between philosophers and scientists begins in this volume on hermeneutic approaches to physics, biology, ethology, mathematics and cognitive science. Scientific principles, methodologies, discourse, language, and metaphors are analyzed, as well as the role of the lay public and the legitimation of science. Different hermeneutical-phenomenological approaches to perception, experiments, methods, discovery and justification and the genesis of science are presented. Hermeneutics shed a new light on the incommensurability of paradigms, the possibility of translation and the historical understanding of science.
Quantitative Human Physiology: An Introduction, winner of a 2018 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty), is the first text to meet the needs of the undergraduate bioengineering student who is being exposed to physiology for the first time but requires a more analytical/quantitative approach. This book explores how component behavior produces system behavior in physiological systems. Communism in Eastern Europe is in crisis. Its dimensions are social and economic; its manifestation is political. A good deal of fern research was carried out contemporaneously to, but independently of Trimen's work. Publications, though, were widely scattered throughout the literature or constituted major works in their own right, i.e. that of R.H. Beddome 1863-1883. Therefore, an additional volume, in the new work ?A Revised Handbook to the Flora of Ceylon?, was published in order to provide an accessible taxonomic base for studies on this element of Sri Lankan vegetation.

Basic research has thrown new light on the importance of free radicals in biol- ogy and medicine. The clarification of interactions opens numerous physio- logical and pathological processes to closer scrutiny. The pathophysiological processes are now understood, even though the basic mechanisms of free radi- cal reaction have as yet escaped full explanation. Asystematic approach makes it possible to re-evaluate and contrast the in- dications, reactions, and prospects for success. The extracellular significance of oxygen radicals in inflammatory condi- tions and their role in the destruction of bacteria in the phagosome of granu- locytes were primary factors intensifying research. Nature also provides a great number of examples which demonstrate that through the emergence of free radicals highly toxic combinations can form from innocuous substances. The reverse principle may also be encountered. Taking into account free radical reactions in pathomorphological investi- gations helps prepare the ground for causal therapy. Research into these phen- omena will contribute to a better understanding of physiological and patho- physiological processes. Many questions still remain unanswered, and it will take several years of research before the final stone is unturned.

The extraordinary shift in conduct and orientation-among companies, governments, and individuals-generated by financialization. The hegemony of finance compels a new orientation for everyone and everything: companies care more about the moods of their shareholders than about longstanding commercial success; governments subordinate citizen welfare to appeasing creditors; and individuals are concerned less with immediate income from labor than with appreciation of their capital goods, skills, connections, and reputations. In this book, in clear and compelling prose, Michel Feher explains the extraordinary shift in conduct and orientation generated by financialization. That firms, states, and people depend more on their ratings than on the product of their activities also changes how capitalism is resisted.
