R3,679 R3,419 Discovery Miles 34 190 Save R260 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the vegetation history of the cultural landscape in southwestern Slovakia, which was established and adopted by mankind and has since constantly evolved in response to ongoing changes (in environmental conditions, biodiversity, land use, etc.). The book analyses four dominant ecosystems typical for the cultural landscape and affected by humans: woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and agricultural land. Each ecosystem is discussed in separate chapters. The chapters include (a) basic information, general aspects, development processes, trends and interpretations, (b) a published or non-published case study based on the author's own research, and (c) an extensive bibliography. A set of maps on the vegetation history and indices of geographical names and plants names serve to round out the coverage. The work provides an essential point of departure for describing the typical regional characteristics of the cultural landscape, with an eye to its future preservatio n.

The French Revolution and the Birth of Modernity (Hardcover): Ferenc Feher The French Revolution and the Birth of Modernity (Hardcover)
Ferenc Feher
R2,381 Discovery Miles 23 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written from widely different perspectives, these essays characterize the Great Revolution as the dawn of the modern age, the grand narrative of modernity. The scope of issues under scrutiny is extremely broad, ranging from the analyses of the hotly debated class character of 1789 and the problem of the nation state to the "Cult of the Supreme Being," the emancipation of the Jews, and the cultural heritage of the Revolution. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1990.

Hermeneutics and Science (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Marta Feher, O. Kiss, L. Ropolyi Hermeneutics and Science (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Marta Feher, O. Kiss, L. Ropolyi
R4,219 Discovery Miles 42 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Hermeneutics was elaborated as a specific art of understanding in humanities. The discovered paradigmatic, historical characteristics of scientific knowledge, and the role of rhetoric, interpretation and contextuality enabled us to use similar arguments in natural sciences too. In this way a new research field, the hermeneutics of science emerged based upon the works of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger and Gadamer. A dialogue between philosophers and scientists begins in this volume on hermeneutic approaches to physics, biology, ethology, mathematics and cognitive science. Scientific principles, methodologies, discourse, language, and metaphors are analyzed, as well as the role of the lay public and the legitimation of science. Different hermeneutical-phenomenological approaches to perception, experiments, methods, discovery and justification and the genesis of science are presented. Hermeneutics shed a new light on the incommensurability of paradigms, the possibility of translation and the historical understanding of science.

Crisis and Reform in Eastern Europe (Paperback): Ferenc Feher Crisis and Reform in Eastern Europe (Paperback)
Ferenc Feher
R1,424 Discovery Miles 14 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Communism in Eastern Europe is in crisis. Its dimensions are social and economic; its manifestation is political. This volume, a collection of essays by leading authorities, describes the symptoms of the crisis, diagnoses the causes of the malady, and offers alternative scenarios for therapy. A unique dimension of this collection is its avoidance of one-dimensional explanations. The contributors approach the subject from very different angles, and start from very distinct sociopolitical premises. The volume includes original accounts of unexplored aspects of East European communism as well as classic interpretations of the economic crisis and social stagnation that characterize the area. Contributions not only examine the sociopolitical behavior of the ruling apparatus, but also analyze its strategies, political culture, and the opposition. Both the professional and the general reader seeking more information about Eastern Europe will find this volume an extensive, in-depth portrait of the current situation in what many observers predict may develop into the major area of tension in post-World War II Europe.

R3,658 Discovery Miles 36 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although ferns were not included in Trimen's original five-volume ?A Handbook to the Flora of Ceylon?, they form a significant part of the vascular flora of the island. A good deal of fern research was carried out contemporaneously to, but independently of Trimen's work. Publications, though, were widely scattered throughout the literature or constituted major works in their own right, i.e. that of R.H. Beddome 1863-1883. Therefore, an additional volume, in the new work ?A Revised Handbook to the Flora of Ceylon?, was published in order to provide an accessible taxonomic base for studies on this element of Sri Lankan vegetation.

Mutant Neoliberalism - Market Rule and Political Rupture (Hardcover): William Callison, Zachary Manfredi Mutant Neoliberalism - Market Rule and Political Rupture (Hardcover)
William Callison, Zachary Manfredi; Contributions by Etienne Balibar, Soeren Brandes, Wendy Brown, …
R3,753 Discovery Miles 37 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Tales of neoliberalism's death are serially overstated. Following the financial crisis of 2008, neoliberalism was proclaimed a "zombie," a disgraced ideology that staggered on like an undead monster. After the political ruptures of 2016, commentators were quick to announce "the end" of neoliberalism yet again, pointing to both the global rise of far-right forces and the reinvigoration of democratic socialist politics. But do new political forces sound neoliberalism's death knell or will they instead catalyze new mutations in its dynamic development? Mutant Neoliberalism brings together leading scholars of neoliberalism-political theorists, historians, philosophers, anthropologists and sociologists-to rethink transformations in market rule and their relation to ongoing political ruptures. The chapters show how years of neoliberal governance, policy, and depoliticization created the conditions for thriving reactionary forces, while also reflecting on whether recent trends will challenge, reconfigure, or extend neoliberalism's reach. The contributors reconsider neoliberalism's relationship with its assumed adversaries and map mutations in financialized capitalism and governance across time and space-from Europe and the United States to China and India. Taken together, the volume recasts the stakes of contemporary debate and reorients critique and resistance within a rapidly changing landscape. This classic piece of German expressionist cinema employs stylized sets, costumes and make-up to tell its story from a shifting point of view. Dr Caligari runs a side show at a fair where a somnambulist predicts someone's death and that night the person is murdered. The somnambulist turns out to be a lunatic from a local asylum and Dr Caligari the asylum's insane director.

Quantum Chemistry - Fundamentals to Applications (Paperback, 1999 ed.): Tamas Veszpremi, Miklos Feher Quantum Chemistry - Fundamentals to Applications (Paperback, 1999 ed.)
Tamas Veszpremi, Miklos Feher
R4,273 Discovery Miles 42 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Quantum Chemistry the branch of Computational Chemistry that applies the laws of Quantum Mechanics to chemical systems] is one of the most dynamic fields of contemporary chemistry, providing a solid foundation for all of chemistry, and serving as the basis for practical, computational methodologies with applications in virtually all branches of chemistry ... The increased sophistication, accuracy and scope of the theory of chemistry are due to a large extent to the spectacular development of quantum chemistry, and in this book the authors have made a remarkable effort to provide a modern account of the field.' From the Foreword by Paul Mezey, University of Saskatchewan. Quantum Chemistry: Fundamentals to Applications develops quantum chemistry all the way from the fundamentals, found in Part I, through the applications that make up Part II. The applications include: molecular structure; spectroscopy; thermodynamics; chemical reactions; solvent effects; and excited state chemistry. The importance of this field is underscored by the fact that the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the development of Quantum Chemistry.

Free Radical Reactions in Medicine (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): Janos Feher, Geza Csomos,... Free Radical Reactions in Medicine (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
Janos Feher, Geza Csomos, Andras Vereckei
R2,640 Discovery Miles 26 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Basic research has thrown new light on the importance of free radicals in biol- ogy and medicine. The clarification of interactions opens numerous physio- logical and pathological processes to closer scrutiny. The pathophysiological processes are now understood, even though the basic mechanisms of free radi- cal reaction have as yet escaped full explanation. Asystematic approach makes it possible to re-evaluate and contrast the in- dications, reactions, and prospects for success. The extracellular significance of oxygen radicals in inflammatory condi- tions and their role in the destruction of bacteria in the phagosome of granu- locytes were primary factors intensifying research. Nature also provides a great number of examples which demonstrate that through the emergence of free radicals highly toxic combinations can form from innocuous substances. The reverse principle may also be encountered. Taking into account free radical reactions in pathomorphological investi- gations helps prepare the ground for causal therapy. Research into these phen- omena will contribute to a better understanding of physiological and patho- physiological processes. Many questions still remain unanswered, and it will take several years of research before the final stone is unturned.

Geza Csomos; Contributions by E. Albano; Edited by Janos Feher; Contributions by B.R. Bacon, F. Biasi, …
R2,621 Discovery Miles 26 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Based on the results of the latest congress of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), this volume makes excellent reading since it explores in detail the role of free radical reactions in liver diseases. Studies in recent years using various methods have shown that free radicals play an important role in toxic liver disorders. For this reason, the current scientific knowledge is presented in this balanced, clinical portrayal. The account refers to the many observations, experiencesand evaluations that have been made both clinically and experimentally. Two major areas discussed concern the pathophysiological changes by free radicals and the therapeutic possibilities that have come to light.

The extraordinary shift in conduct and orientation-among companies, governments, and individuals-generated by financialization. The hegemony of finance compels a new orientation for everyone and everything: companies care more about the moods of their shareholders than about longstanding commercial success; governments subordinate citizen welfare to appeasing creditors; and individuals are concerned less with immediate income from labor than with appreciation of their capital goods, skills, connections, and reputations. In this book, in clear and compelling prose, Michel Feher explains the extraordinary shift in conduct and orientation generated by financialization. That firms, states, and people depend more on their ratings than on the product of their activities also changes how capitalism is resisted. For activists, the focus of grievances shifts from the extraction of profit to the conditions under which financial institutions allocate credit. While the exploitation of employees by their employers has hardly been curbed, the power of investors to select investees-to decide who and what is deemed creditworthy-has become a new site of social struggle. Above all, Feher articulates the new political resistances and aspirations that investees draw from their rated agency.
