Felice Orsini fu un agitatore e insurrezionalista italiano, noto per aver tentato di assassinare Napoleone III, Imperatore di Francia. Il libro e la succinta narrazione dei fatti e rivolgimenti, dei quali fin dal 1833 fu testimone e parte. Orsini dedica il racconto delle sue vicende ai giovani perche, come scrive, conoscano "la ragione dell'odio profondo, che deve nutrire il patriota italiano contro il papato, il dispotismo interno, e la dominazione straniera"; perche conoscano "gli uomini, ch'ebbero in mano le sorti patrie nel 1848, e che pretendono dare oggi la direzione al moto nazionale"; e perche, infine, conoscano "gli errori, che di rovescio in rovescio hanno condotto gli Italiani nella presente schiavitu, ed i repubblicani nella discordia, nella sfiducia, e nell'impotenza." Il libro, insomma, oltre a tracciare la figura del personaggio Orsini, e utile per una riflessione sui miti del Risorgimento italiano.
