The term 'cityscaping' is here introduced to characterise the creative process through which the image of the city is created and represented in various media - text, film and artefacts. It thus turns attention away from built urban spaces and onto mental images of cities. One focus is on the question of which literary, visual and acoustic means prompt their recipients' spatial imagination; another is to inquire into the semantics and functions that are ascribed to the image of a city as constructed in various media. The examples of ancient texts and works of art, and modern literature and films, are used to elucidate the artistic potential of images of the city and the techniques by which they are semanticised. With its interdisciplinary approach, the volume for the first time makes clear how strongly mental images of urban space, both ancient and modern, have been shaped by the techniques of their representation in media.
Wilhelm Dilthey and Hans-Georg Gadamer were probably the last great scholars who had taken Philipp Melanchthon seriously as a philosopher. In the 20th century interest was almost exclusively restricted to his role in the history of the Reformation. However, in recent decades the situation has changed greatly. Melanchthon has aroused general interest in the field of the history of science and education, as well as in individual disciplines such as research on dialectics and rhetoric. In this volume Melanchthon is presented for the first time as a universal scholar and so made accessible to a broader public.
Until 1531, Rhenanus (1485a "1547) had been known almost exclusively as a philologist and editor. Then he produced Res Germanicae, an historical work superior in both its methodology and reliability to anything similar from Germany. The present edition, which includes Sturma (TM)s life of Rhenanus, explicates the text with its translation, list of sources and indexes. The studies in the commentary take account of the authora (TM)s correspondence, explain his methodology and examine the text for influences from 15th and 16th century Italian and German humanists.
