The Portuguese in the Creole Indian Ocean - Essays in Historical Cosmopolitanism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Fernando Rosa The Portuguese in the Creole Indian Ocean - Essays in Historical Cosmopolitanism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Fernando Rosa
R3,327 Discovery Miles 33 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This monograph is an exploration of the historical legacy of the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean, in particular in Goa, Macau, Melaka, and Malabar. Instead of fixing the gaze on either the colonial or the indigenous, it attempts to scrutinise a creole space that is rooted in Indian Ocean cosmopolitanism.

Cosmopolitan Asia - Littoral Epistemologies of the Global South (Paperback): Sharmani Gabriel, Fernando Rosa Cosmopolitan Asia - Littoral Epistemologies of the Global South (Paperback)
Sharmani Gabriel, Fernando Rosa
R1,413 Discovery Miles 14 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One key concept in the large body of scholarship concerned with theorizing social relations is the idea of 'cosmopolitanism'. This book unpacks the idea of cosmopolitanism through the linked knowledges of the Global South. It brings into dialogue an inter-disciplinary team of local and transnational scholars who examine various temporal, cultural, spatial and political contexts in countries as different, yet connected, as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The book also considers a wide range of subjects - present and historical, real, as represented in literature and in theatre, and as theorized in philosophy - across these diverse contexts, but always focusing on regions and places where inter-Asian intermingling has taken place. The conclusions arrived at are varied and considerably enrich social theorizing. The book reveals a cosmopolitanism that is much more specifically Asian than the cosmopolitanism usually associated with the West, demonstrates how concepts of 'nation', 'local' and 'globalization' play out in practice in Asian settings, and re-examines concepts such as migration, diaspora, and the construction of identities. The book has much to offer scholars engaged in history, literary studies, anthropology and cultural studies.

Caribbean Transnationalism - Migration, Socialization, and Social Cohesion (Hardcover, New): Ruben Gowricharn Caribbean Transnationalism - Migration, Socialization, and Social Cohesion (Hardcover, New)
Ruben Gowricharn; Contributions by Rosemary Allen, Rubens da Silva Ferreira, Marjo De Theije, Wim Hoogbergen, …
R2,537 Discovery Miles 25 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Exploring the old and new forms of transnationalism stemming from the Caribbean, Caribbean Transnationalism challenges present concepts about diaspora, brings into perspective new forms of transnationalism, and offers new perspectives on social cohesion in plural societies. The novelty of this collection of essays by experts from a wide range of disciplines consists not only of the theoretical clarity it offers with regard to issues related to diaspora, transnationalism, and social cohesion, but also of the ample attention given to the intra-regional transnational communities and the discussion of ethnification for social cohesion. Caribbean Transnationalism calls into question traditional views held in the expanding fields of migration, transnationalism, and social cohesion, making this an important book for scholars and students interested in the study of the social sciences and Caribbean studies.
