Humans stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally change the way we live, work, and relate to one another. As digital transformation leaders, we have opportunities to shape that digital future to create both financial value and human value — balancing doing well and doing good. We must lead differently — but how? In this book, the authors introduce a new leadership model that surfaces the critical challenges digital transformation leaders encounter and the human-centered leadership capabilities that can be used to overcome them.Using case studies, business paradigms, and new capability models, this book explores the unique responsibilities of digital transformation leadership within five leadership levels:Digital transformation leaders wrestling with the human issues behind conceiving, developing, and implementing innovation and technology will find a wealth of practical advice, provocative questions, and new thinking about how we lead. How shall we create an equitable digital future for all humans?

If the unexamined life is not worth living, surely the unexamined media is not worth heeding. Sentinel Under Siege traces the evolution of the media in the United States and its capacity to examine and regulate itself, from its earliest colonial roots to the modern explosion of digital technology.Once the Bill of Rights was enacted in 1791, the press became the first and only enterprise explicitly protected by the United States Constitution. This book is concerned with the legal content given to freedom of the press by the Supreme Court, and the fitful attempts of media criticism?both intramural and external?to build a greater sense of responsibility among the practitioners.Stanley Flink, former correspondent of Life Magazine and writer/producer at NBC and CBS, is concerned less with the people's right to know than with the people's need to know. Only a competent, responsible press?whatever its means of distribution?can perform the role of watchdog over official abuse of power, business corruption, and political distortions. But the acquisition of so many newspapers, magazines, and broadcasting facilities by corporate conglomerates threatens a new kind of prior restraint on an independent press?the conflicts of interest; the power of advertising; the unspoken self-censorship of reporters and editors, print or electronic, based on the perceived predilections of their employers; and the financial interests of related companies.Flink believes that responsible journalism can also be economically viable in the twenty-first century because the mass communication of reliable news reporting and media accountability will be vital to the democratic process. Unless the news media persistently seeks the high moral ground of public service, the first casualty will be an informed electorate. The second may well be constitutional protection.
Eclipses and problems related to them have been, from ancient times, one of the main interests not only of astronomers but indeed of all mankind. The appearance of eclipses, lunar as well as solar, excited the imagination of our ancestors and provoked their curiosity to explain their origin or to use them for the further investigation of celestial bodies. With the present development of astronomy the eclipse problems are not limited to the Sun and the Moon, as in the past, but have been progressively extended to the components of the solar system and to domains of radiations other than optical ones. Our intention is to give an account of all these problems in their theoretical and experimental form with some additions on their historical development. Those of our readers not interested in the historical side may feel at first inclined to ignore this part, but we are sure that eventually they will be sufficiently interested to repair this omission.

The saga and history of the inside struggles and conflicts of a surprisingly small group of international visionaries and activists who shaped the business, administration, and governance of men’s professional tennis from 1919 to 1990 and beyond is told in Pioneers of the Game. The book documents the pioneer’s 40-year competition between amateur and professional tennis which eventually forced the approval of Open Tennis in 1968, followed by the creation and development of the business, administration, and governance of men’s tennis as a professional sport between 1968 and1990 and beyond, with the divided governance and the advent of the ATP Tour. The author is Marshall Happer, who was the first and only “commissioner†of men’s professional tennis as the head of the Men's Tennis Council, the first and last unified governing body of men’s tennis from 1974-1989. This historical volume profiles, honors, and ranks these administrative legends which include Jack Kramer, Phillippe Chatrier, Lamar Hunt, Herman David, Derek Hardwick, Robert Kelleher, Donald Dell, Mike Davies, Stan Malless, Tony Trabert, Arthur Ashe, and Cliff Drysdale, among others.

This is a book for everyone who has encountered what the author calls "deep-end experiences . . . challenges that cloud our outlook like the veiled gravity of deep water." Retirement was like that for journalist Jane Flink. She was addicted to the adrenalin rush of her 30-year career as reporter, photographer and editor, and as owner and publisher of a weekly newspaper. In 2001, in response to the incursions of "relentless time," Flink and her husband, Dick, sold their newspaper and retired to a lake house in central Missouri. In her home office each week, Flink writes newspaper columns as she has for 20 years, employing wisdom, humor and a wealth of knowledge to seek identity in the unstructured world of retirement. "If work is a complement to the well-lived life and the ticket to expectation," she writes, "what is retirement -- a rocking chair, or an invitation to self-starters?" This collection of essays was written between 2003 and 2006. Finding the contemplative life elusive, the author explores the comforting realities of everyday existence, the mysteries of creative vision, and the treasures that spring from unexplored territory. Page by page, Jane Flink leads her readers with gentle artistry toward the charting of their own unmarked trails.
In this sweeping cultural history, James Flink provides a fascinating account of the creation of the world's first automobile culture. He offers both a critical survey of the development of automotive technology and the automotive industry and an analysis of the social effects of "automobility" on workers and consumers.James J. Flink is an affiliate of the Institute of Transportation Studies and Professor of Comparative Culture at the University of California, Irvine.
An innovative, comprehensive guide--the first of its kind--to help parents understand and accept learning disabilities in their children, offering tips and strategies for successfully advocating on their behalf and helping them become their own best advocates. In Thinking Differently, David Flink, the leader of Eye to Eye--a national mentoring program for students with learning and attention issues--enlarges our understanding of the learning process and offers powerful, innovative strategies for parenting, teaching, and supporting the 20 percent of students with learning disabilities. An outstanding fighter who has helped thousands of children adapt to their specific learning issues, Flink understands the needs and experiences of these children first hand. He, too, has dyslexia and ADHD. Focusing on how to arm students who think and learn differently with essential skills, including meta-cognition and self-advocacy, Flink offers real, hard advice, providing the tools to address specific problems they face--from building self-esteem and reconstructing the learning environment, to getting proper diagnoses and discovering their inner gifts. With his easy, hands-on "Step-by-Step Launchpad to Empowerment," parents can take immediate steps to improve their children's lives. Thinking Differently is a brilliant, compassionate work, packed with essential insights and real-world applications indispensable for parents, educators, and other professional involved with children with learning disabilities.
