In celebration of Art Basel's 44th year--the first to include three exhibitions on three continents--JRP-Ringier joins Art Basel in publishing a new book documenting the dynamic experience of its Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong fairs. "Art Basel - Year 44," designed by Gavillet & Rust (Geneva), has an A-to-Z format that maps the world of Art Basel with a comprehensive look at the shows of 2013. This elegant, hardcover publication offers the widening audience of art lovers a compilation of portfolios, interviews and essays on contemporary art, and lists all exhibitors participating in the three exhibitions. It depicts works from the different shows' sectors, highlights events and talks, and gives art world experts, curators and collectors a platform for sharing their expertise, providing an immersive art experience for the reader. Among the authors and artists featured are John M. Armleder, Nicholas Baume, Harry Bellet, Dara Birnbaum, Florence Derieux, Herzog & de Meuron, Gianni Jetzer, Tadashi Kawamata, Arto Lindsay, Malcolm McLaren, Elaine Ng, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Mickalene Thomas and Adrian Wong, as well as many others whose work contributed to the exhibitions on all three continents. An extensive survey, a path to discovery and an indispensable piece of memorabilia, "Art Basel - Year 44" will no doubt be a favorite addition to the library of essential art books for the expanding global art world community.
The first true monograph on the work of celebrated French conceptual artist and sculptor Bernar Venet Bernar Venet is one of France's most celebrated living artists. Having emerged from the late 1960s avant-garde scene in New York, Venet developed a personal aesthetic based on an innovative use of mathematics and science, where control, chance, and chaos converge to form a fine equilibrium while investigating their relationship with the environment. Conversant in many media, Venet is mostly known for his monumental outdoor sculptures in major cities worldwide and, in fall 19, his Arc Majeur is due for completion at a site in Belgium - at almost 200 feet in height (60 metres), Venet's sculpture will be taller than New York's Statue of Liberty.
Moroccan-born, Switzerland-based artist Latifa Echakhch (born 1974) investigates cultural transfer and displaced identity through installation, sculpture, video and performance, culturally stereotyping artifacts such as flagpoles, Moroccan tea glasses and India ink in her art.
We owe our idea of the contemporary exhibition to Harald Szeemann--the first of the jet-setting international curators. From 1961 to 1969, he was Curator of the Kunsthalle Bern, where in 1968 he had the foresight to give Christo and Jeanne-Claude the opportunity to wrap the entire museum building. Szeemann's groundbreaking 1969 exhibition "When Attitudes Become Form," also at the Kunsthalle, introduced European audiences to artists like Joseph Beuys, Eva Hesse, Richard Serra and Lawrence Weiner. It also introduced the now-commonplace practice of curating an exhibition around a theme. Since Szeemann's death in 2005, there has been research underway at his archive in Tessin, Switzerland. An invaluable resource, this volume provides access to previously unpublished plans, documents and photographs from the archive, along with important essays by Hal Foster and Jean-Marc Poinsot. There is also an informative interview with Tobia Bezzola--curator at the Kunsthauz Zurich and Szeemann's collaborator for many years. Two of Szeemann's most ambitious exhibitions are presented as case studies: Documenta V (1972) and "L'Autre," the 4th Lyon Biennial (1997). A biography, an illustrated chronology of Szeemann's exhibitions and a selection of his writings complete this exhaustive survey.
