The Korean Economy examines how Korea's inward FDI-led
globalization, particularly since the financial crisis of 1997, has
been experienced, understood, managed and often strongly resisted
in various economic, social and cultural domains. It is an in-depth
analysis combining perspectives from politics and economics,
examining a number of grievances as seen through the eyes of actual
foreign investors operating in Korea. The authors argue that it is
precisely these obstacles that need to be addressed if Korea is to
live up to its full potential in terms of becoming a truly
attractive magnet for FDI and comprehensively integrating into the
global economy. The authors make a convincing case that the
challenges Korea currently faces are by no means limited to
institutional and policy reforms, but rather are entrenched in an
anti-globalization mindset shared by all sectors of society. This
critical examination of the Korean government's inward FDI policies
includes the experiences of around 50 CEOs of operating MNCs in
Korea including various chambers of commerce and law firms. It also
examines both perceptions and realities of the Korean market from
in-depth interviews with over 50 foreign CEOs of MNCs operating in
Korea, as well as a critical examination of Korea's current efforts
to become a Northeast Asian business centre. This book will appeal
to academics and postgraduate students of Asian studies and
international business, the foreign business community (including
existing and potential foreign investors to the Korean market) as
well as government and policy makers.

Present energy systems are undergoing a radical transformation,
driven by the urgent need to address the climate change crisis. At
the same time, we are witnessing the sharp growth of energy data
and a revolution of advanced technologies, with artificial
intelligence (AI) and Blockchain emerging as two of the most
transformative technologies of our time. The convergence of these
two technologies has the potential to create a paradigm shift in
the energy sector, enabling the development of smart energy systems
that are more resilient, efficient, and sustainable. This book
situates itself at the forefront of this paradigm shift, providing
a timely and comprehensive guide to AI and Blockchain technologies
in the energy system. Moving from an introduction to the basic
concepts of smart energy systems, this book proceeds to examine the
key challenges facing the energy system, and how AI and Blockchain
can be used to address these challenges. Research examples are
presented to showcase the role and impact of these new
technologies, while the latest developed testbeds are summarised
and explained to help researchers accelerate their development of
these technologies. This book is an indispensable guide to the
current changes in the energy system, being of particular use to
industry professionals, from researchers to management, looking to
stay ahead of technological developments.
The book is the first attempt to offer a holistic and integrated
exploration of the political-economic framework underpinning
economic regionalism. In doing so it provides a much-needed
contribution to the literature on international political economy,
international relations and Asian political economy in relation to
economic regionalism. The existing literature provides broad
generalizations and limited discussion on economic integration
(i.e. free trade agreements, FTA) with most analyses of regionalism
generally contained to the field of economics with a focus on the
welfare implications of FTAs, both for participating countries and
the world as a whole. Readers of this book can view economic
regionalism from a variety of perspectives with input from Chinese,
Japanese and Korean research institutes, business and industry
groups, and government officials. Drawing on the considerable
country experience and expertise of the authors, the book attempts
to unravel the paradox of the market-driven economic globalization
process (regionalism) and address a serious gap in the current
literature relating to the political-economic characteristics and
strategies of China, Japan and Korea in relation to economic
regionalism.
A sequel to the well received book, Quantum Mechanics by T Y Wu,
this book carries on where the earlier volume ends. This present
volume follows the generally pedagogic style of Quantum Mechanics.
The scope ranges from relativistic quantum mechanics to an
introduction to quantum field theory with quantum electrodynamics
as the basic example and ends with an exposition of important
issues related to the standard model. The book presents the subject
in basic and easy-to-grasp notions which will enhance the purpose
of this book as a useful textbook in the area of relativistic
quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics.

Two celebrated artists, Sandra Boynton and Yo-Yo Ma, come together
for Jungle Night, a soothing bedtime board book. (Okay,
MOSTLY soothing.) This board book guides us through the jungle to
hear the distinctive, gentle snore of each animal: “Listen to the
tiger: ZEEE-ZOOO-HAAA. Listen to the
cheetah: CHEE-CHEE-TAAAH.” A free downloadable recording at
JungleNight.com offers a narration of the book, with each and every
animal snore interpreted by the expressive, playful cello of Yo-Yo
Ma. He even does the elephant’s stop-the-show snore—though
admittedly that took Ma’s cello PLUS the classic horn salute of
the James R. Barker steamship. (Seriously.) All this fabulousness
leads into the coolest lullaby ever: “Jungle Gymnopédie No.
1,” a polyrhythmic jungle-y arrangement by Boynton of Erik
Satie’s renowned piece, with Yo-Yo Ma on cello, guitar played by
Ron Block of Alison Krauss Union Station, and drums by Kevin
MacLeod. “Yo-Yo and I chose this piece because it’s the most
gorgeous and mesmerizing night song imaginable,” explains
Boynton. “And there was surely nothing else that could get those
animals back to sleep after that elephant blast.”
This book is a distillation of Prof T Y Wu's fifty years of
experience teaching quantum theory to many generations of
physicists. Starting with chapters on classical physics and the old
quantum theory, Prof Wu quickly develops Heisenberg's matrix
mechanics and the Schroedinger equation. After a detailed treatment
of the general formulation of quantum theory, standard discussions
on Perturbation Theory and the Hydrogen Atom follow. A fairly
exhaustive treatment of the Zeeman effect is to be found in these
chapter. Many electron atoms are treated expertly. The former is
treated with great depth; the latter is a good introduction to the
subject.

Using the case study of Singapore, this book examines the
production of a set of institutionalized relationships and ethical
meanings that link citizens to each other and the state. It looks
at how questions of culture and morality are resolved, and how
state-society relations are established that render paradoxes and
inequalities acceptable, and form the basis of a national political
culture. The Singapore government has put in place a number of
policies to encourage marriage and boost fertility that has
attracted much attention, and are often taken as evidence that the
Singapore state is a social engineer. The book argues that these
policies have largely failed to reverse demographic trends, and
reveals that the effects of the policies are far more interesting
and significant. As Singaporeans negotiate various rules and
regulations, they form a set of ties to each other and to the
state. These institutionalized relationships and shared meanings,
referred to as neoliberal morality, render particular ideals about
family natural. Based on extensive field work, the book is a useful
contribution to studies on Asian Culture and Society,
Globalisation, as well as Development Studies.
