Europe and the Refugee Crisis - Local Responses to Migrants (Hardcover): Frances Trix Europe and the Refugee Crisis - Local Responses to Migrants (Hardcover)
Frances Trix
R3,986 Discovery Miles 39 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since 2014, more than 60 million people have been displaced from their homes across the Middle East and Africa. The European Refugee Crisis, as it has come to be known, is now the largest such crisis since the aftermath of World War II. How have local communities reacted to the influx of asylum seekers? And what can we learn from their responses? Frances Trix here offers a wide-ranging ethnographical and anthropological study of local, individual responses to refugees, from Macedonia to Germany. Based on extensive interviews and field work in Europe, Trix focuses for the first time on the ways that refugees have been welcomed - or not, as the case may be - by various individuals and communities. Her work ranges from Macedonians who established an NGO and lobbied to allow the refugees to use the train, to the police charged with border management; from a German organic food store owner who by her actions set the positive tone in her village, a retired IT manager who coordinates refugee volunteers for his entire town, to the district work organisation director who deems refugees unsuitable for multiple reasons. The material is measured throughout against Trix's anthropological experience, as well as reference to the historical and political contexts in which events are unfolding. This book is essential reading for all those working on the refugee crisis and the prospects - both local and global - for the future.

Love in the Time of Ethnography - Essays on Connection as a Focus and Basis for Research (Hardcover): Lucinda Carspecken Love in the Time of Ethnography - Essays on Connection as a Focus and Basis for Research (Hardcover)
Lucinda Carspecken; Contributions by Lucinda Carspecken, Phil Francis Carspecken, Jana Clark, Barbara Dennis, …
R2,797 Discovery Miles 27 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Love in the Time of Ethnography explores love - variously defined - as an important facet of human life and a worthy focus of study. The authors look at love in association with an Alevi and Sunni couple in Turkey, organizers of Mexican American and immigrant youth movements, Christian missionaries in China, an elderly man with dementia, two women "coming home" to queer identity, a White researcher working with Black women in the US, the common ground between Dogen's Zen teachings and Habermas's critical theory, an Albanian Sufi community in Michigan and interactions between humans and the natural world. It also includes theoretical writing on the place of love in social analysis, whether this involves relationships between researchers and participants or the nature of human connection itself. The authors argue that social research is an affective process as well as a cognitive one, and that fellow feeling is an essential component of making sense of the world. Along with more traditional scholarly forms, the contributors to this book use auto-ethnography, life stories, archival research and poetry, noting that style itself conveys information and emotion. Writing is always to some extent partisan. While anthropologists and other social researchers have explored this idea over the last few decades, they have more often explored it with an eye to critique than to the ideals underlying that critique. This is a collection of essays about what ethnographers are aiming for as well as the problems they address, and the authors discuss ethical principles like agape, hizmet and carino as rationales for ethnography and rationales for social change.

Spiritual Discourse - Learning with an Islamic Master (Paperback): Frances Trix Spiritual Discourse - Learning with an Islamic Master (Paperback)
Frances Trix
R794 Discovery Miles 7 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Spiritual Discourse" is a study of the process by which Baba Rexheb, a ninety-year-old Albanian leader of the Bektashi order, and Frances Trix, an American student who has studied with him for over twenty years, come to share a common universe of experience and attunement. Overall what is being passed on is not facts but a relationship, for the relationship of "seeker" and "master" mirrors that of the human and God.

Urban Muslim Migrants in Istanbul - Identity and Trauma Among Balkan Immigrants (Hardcover): Frances Trix Urban Muslim Migrants in Istanbul - Identity and Trauma Among Balkan Immigrants (Hardcover)
Frances Trix
R4,570 Discovery Miles 45 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Some fled following World War II, and travelled east by train to Istanbul with no more than a suitcase. And yet 50 years later, one of their migrant associations was second only to the Red Crescent in providing aid to the urban poor of Istanbul.Frances Trix analyses the development of the oldest such association, originally founded to welcome new migrants as they arrived from Skopje after World War II, and shows how Islam is central to its structure and practices. Her wide-ranging study variously focuses on its leadership, the growing role of women in the organisation, and the importance of music and poetry in coping with exile. In so doing, she raises wider questions concerning the preservation and articulation of identity amongst migrant communities. Urban Muslim Migrants in Istanbul is a rare ethnography of an Islamic urban group based on extensive archival research and interviews in various languages across Istanbul, Skopje and Kosovo. Trix's unique approach brings a human element to the study of forced migration, conflict and trauma and it is an important book for academics and policymakers interested in the Balkans, the Middle East, Turkey and migration studies.
