Gregory Breit Centennial Symposium, The (Hardcover): Vernon W. Hughes, Francesco Iachello, Dimitri Kusnezov Gregory Breit Centennial Symposium, The (Hardcover)
Vernon W. Hughes, Francesco Iachello, Dimitri Kusnezov
R5,377 Discovery Miles 53 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book contains the proceedings of the Gregory Breit Centennial Symposium. The legacy of Breit to atomic, nuclear and particle physics is discussed vis-a-vis modern developments in these fields. Among other subjects, the present status of the Breit interaction in atomic physics and of the nucleon-nucleon interaction are reviewed. The second part of the book contains a more in-depth presentation of the status of modern nuclear physics, from relativistic heavy ion physics to nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics. The recently confirmed discovery of supersymmetry in nuclei is also discussed.

Lie Algebras and Applications (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2015): Francesco Iachello Lie Algebras and Applications (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2015)
Francesco Iachello
R2,308 Discovery Miles 23 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This course-based primer provides an introduction to Lie algebras and some of their applications to the spectroscopy of molecules, atoms, nuclei and hadrons. In the first part, it concisely presents the basic concepts of Lie algebras, their representations and their invariants. The second part includes a description of how Lie algebras are used in practice in the treatment of bosonic and fermionic systems. Physical applications considered include rotations and vibrations of molecules (vibron model), collective modes in nuclei (interacting boson model), the atomic shell model, the nuclear shell model, and the quark model of hadrons. One of the key concepts in the application of Lie algebraic methods in physics, that of spectrum generating algebras and their associated dynamic symmetries, is also discussed. The book highlights a number of examples that help to illustrate the abstract algebraic definitions and includes a summary of many formulas of practical interest, such as the eigenvalues of Casimir operators, and the dimensions of the representations of all classical Lie algebras. For this new edition, the text has been carefully revised and expanded; in particular, a new chapter has been added on the deformation and contraction of Lie algebras. From the reviews of the first edition: "Iachello has written a pedagogical and straightforward presentation of Lie algebras [...]. It is a great text to accompany a course on Lie algebras and their physical applications." (Marc de Montigny, Mathematical Reviews, Issue, 2007 i) "This book [...] written by one of the leading experts in the field [...] will certainly be of great use for students or specialists that want to refresh their knowledge on Lie algebras applied to physics. [...] An excellent reference for those interested in acquiring practical experience [...] and leaving the embarrassing theoretical presentations aside." (Rutwig Campoamor-Stursberg, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1156, 2009)

Francesco Iachello
R2,382 Discovery Miles 23 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, designed for advanced graduate students and post-graduate researchers, introduces Lie algebras and some of their applications to the spectroscopy of molecules, atoms, nuclei and hadrons. The book contains many examples that help to elucidate the abstract algebraic definitions. It provides a summary of many formulas of practical interest, such as the eigenvalues of Casimir operators and the dimensions of the representations of all classical Lie algebras.

Da Hsuan Feng, Francesco Iachello, Jialun Ping, Fan Wang
R5,503 Discovery Miles 55 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a tribute to the life and work of J Q Chen. The contributions of Chen to nuclear and molecular physics are discussed vis-a-vis present developments in these fields. Among other subjects, the present status of microscopic theories of the interacting boson model in nuclear physics and the theory of symmetry adaptation of molecular vibrations in molecular physics are reviewed. The latter theory is particularly useful for large molecular species such as fullerenes, where icosahedral symmetry plays a fundamental role.
