Trade Relations Between the EU and Africa - Development, Challenges and Options Beyond the Cotonou Agreement (Hardcover):... Trade Relations Between the EU and Africa - Development, Challenges and Options Beyond the Cotonou Agreement (Hardcover)
Yenkong Ngangjoh-Hodu, Francis A.S.T. Matambalya

Trade liberalisation and openness, as linchpins for development have been flagships of conventional economic policy advices to most African countries over the last few decades. Much of the orientation of the focus however has been on the impact of international trade on development rather than the requirements that development should inform the shaping of the international trading system so that African countries may be able to benefit from such trade. This view has permeated both academic debate and the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Negotiation between the European Commission and groups of African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States.

This timely volume advances an alternative set of inter-related, interdisciplinary perspectives and debates which contribute to overlapping genres and discourses, notably how rules of origins may stifle the development dimension of EPAs, how special agricultural safeguards may be used in balancing the effects of trade liberalisation on small farm holders in Africa. It also discusses the centrality of aid for trade in trade negotiations, and mainstreaming development in the EPAs debate to enhance domestic supply side in Africa and the various regional integration processes in the region.

This book focuses on areas of trade that may inform the development dimension of international trade. With this edited volume, a team of specialists provide a comprehensive survey of ACP ?EU trade and Africa trade relation in the global context, placing it in its legal, economic and political contexts. The book innovative approach coupled with a stimulating and accessible writing style, allows the reader to engage fully with the content. It will be of most value to students, scholars and related policymakers of international, development and trade economics.

Regional Integration, Identity and Citizenship in the Greater Horn of Africa (Hardcover): Kidane Mengisteab, Redie Bereketeab Regional Integration, Identity and Citizenship in the Greater Horn of Africa (Hardcover)
Kidane Mengisteab, Redie Bereketeab; Contributions by Abdinur S. Mohamud, Ali N. Mohamed, Assefaw Bariagaber, …

Examines how regional integration can resolve the crises of the Greater Horn of Africa, exploring how it can be used as a mechanism for conflict resolution, promoting the economy and tackling issues of identity and citizenship. The Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) is engulfed by three interrelated crises: various inter-state wars, civil wars, and inter-communal conflicts; an economic crisis manifested in widespread debilitating poverty, chronic food insecurity and famines; and environmental degradation that is ravaging the region. While it is apparent that the countries of the region are unlikely to be able to deal with the crises individually, there is consensus that their chances of doing so improve markedly with collective regional action. The contributors to this volume address the need for regional integration in the GHA. They identify those factors that can foster integration, such as the proper management of equitable citizenship rights, as well as examining those that impede it, including the region's largely ineffective integration scheme, IGAD, and explore how the former can be strengthened and the latter transformed; explain how regional integration can mitigate the conflicts; and examine how integration can help to energise the region's economy. Kidane Mengisteab is Professor of African Studies and Political Science at Penn State University; Redie Bereketeab is a researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute, Sweden.

The New EU-ACP Partnership - Consequences for Eastern and Southern Africa (Paperback): Francis A.S.T. Matambalya The New EU-ACP Partnership - Consequences for Eastern and Southern Africa (Paperback)
Francis A.S.T. Matambalya
R1,190 Discovery Miles 11 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The series Political Dialogue Studies takes up topical issues that are directly or indirectly relevant to political dynamics in Tanzania. This first publication in the series analyses the new partnership agreement between the EU and ACP states signed in June 2000, and governing the next twenty years. The ideas presented emanate from a critical observation of the dynamics of EU development policy and the pertinent developments in the international system. The author assesses the viability of, and the practical options for, regionalised co-operation between the EU and the economies of the Eastern and Southern African sub-region as envisaged in the framework agreement. Through detailed study of the Lome Convention and the pertinent global developments, the author examines the implications of regionalising EU-ACP co-operation for the Eastern and Southern African states within a broader context. He makes concrete suggestions from the analysis as to the future shape of co-operation.
