This clearly written thesis discusses the development of a highly innovative single-photon source that uses active optical switching, known as multiplexing, to increase the probability of delivering photons into a single mode. Improving single-photon sources is critical in advancing the state of the art in photonic quantum technologies for information processing and communications.

This is the first full-scale study of the career of late-eighteenth century entrepreneur William Duer. A member of the New York State Convention and the Continental Congress, and Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury when the Federal government was organized, Duer had a role in all the significant changes that occurred during the revolutionary period. In addition, Duer was a stock speculator, a land promoter, an army contractor, and merchant. While he was Secretary to the Board of Treasury, Duer floated the Scioto Land Comapny, one of the biggest speculations ever attempted in the United States.

I put together recollections in England that describe my early years to retirement in 1988. Born in 1923 the world was reasonably peaceful until 1939. WW2 started and I relate some encounters during that conflict, while serving in the Navy. My profession as a Naval Officer ended due to a war related disability in 1946, so a civilian environment took over. Married, we moved to Zambia and back farming. To Dublin managing a sail loft and Marine hardware; and so to America, which had a quieter and more orderly atmosphere. The memoirs describe those times, with some interesting side trips on the way.
