A work from Francis Thynne, whose cousin was Sir John Thynne of Longleat House, was drawn to London by his uncle William Thynne, chief clerk of the King's kitchen and a master of the Household from, who is remembered as an editor of Chaucer. 1876. Thynn's long narrative poem, The Debate Between Pride and Lowliness, is thought to have inspired the form of the work and the fundamental idea for Greene's Quip for an Upstart Courtier or a Quaint Dispute between Velvet-Breeches and Cloth-Breeches, that of the medieval dream-vision.
