This book is based on an international symposium titled "Cytochrome
oxidase in energy metabolism and Alzheimer's disease," held as a
satellite to the 27th meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, New
Orleans, 1997. The symposium was dedicated in honor of Dr. Margaret
T. T. Wong-Riley because, in our opinion, the cytochrome oxidase
histo chemical method introduced by Dr. Wong-Riley in 1979 was the
most significant break through to map energy metabolism in the
entire brain since the 2-deoxyglucose method introduced by Dr.
Louis Sokoloff and colleagues in 1977. Both of these metabolic map
ping techniques have made monumental contributions to brain
research by allowing an integral view of brain activity. They have
also developed into various specialized tech niques, including
applications to the human brain. One of these new applications,
which is described in detail in this book, is the quantitative
cytochrome oxidase cytochemical method used to study Alzheimer's
disease. The objective of this book is to describe the role of
cytochrome oxidase in neuronal metabolism and Alzheimer's disease.
Whether genetic or environmental, the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's
disease involves a cascade of multiple intracellular events,
eventually re sulting in failure of oxidative energy metabolism.
Could impairment of cytochrome oxi dase in energy metabolism
initiate the degenerative process? Cytochrome oxidase function and
dysfunction are discussed in relationship to neuronal energy
metabolism, neurodegen eration, and Alzheimer's disease. The book
is made up of 10 chapters, divided into three major parts."
Spain is facing an increasingly difficult situation in terms of
water stress. This is an issue that is due mostly to poor
management practices in all sectors. Large amounts of water have
been used for agricultural purposes at very low prices for too
long; there is an uncontrolled use of most aquifers in rural areas
which result from ineffective control by the public administration;
per capita consumption continues increasing as well as water used
for industrial and energy generation, the construction and tourism
sectors and for recreation activities. In fact, they have all
exerted additional pressure on available water resources. In order
to face the above challenges, water policy has made a gradual shift
towards more rational and sustainable management of water
resources. This has also been influenced by the European Water
Framework Directive about which, as the book discusses, there are
both myths and misunderstandings. This book analyses the very
complex position of all sectors in the country, the alternatives
available and the challenges ahead. In so doing, it makes an
important contribution to the literature on water resources
management. This book was published as a special issue of the
International Journal of Water Resources Development.
This book focuses on participation of the public and private
sectors in urban water management and on the role of water pricing.
It discusses in-depth topics such as public choices of urban water
service management; dynamics of privatization and regulation of
water services; adoption of water demand instruments; impacts of
price and non-price policies on residential water demand; quality
of water services; lessons from not-for-profit public-private
partnerships; and critical examinations of models and projections
of demands in water utility resource planning in England and Wales.
Appropriateness of water prices and tariffs in achieving socially
desirable outcomes is also analyzed and a global survey of urban
water tariffs is approached with a focus on sustainability,
efficiency and fairness. This book was originally published as a
special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources
Management.

Every book relating the history of modern architecture features a
large number of pages dedicated to avant-garde designs and the
formation of the modern movement in the interwar years, and a
similar number devoted to reconstruction and expansion after the
Second World War. Meanwhile, as if owing to lack of understanding
or convenient silence, there is void of dark years, of wars, exile
and misfortune about which little can be said. However, it was in
these dark times, as in so many other revealing moments in the
history of culture, that experimental and profoundly invigorating
experiences were taking place. Architects and artists voluntarily
or forcibly driven to the margins of social importance began to
react to a culturally unsustainable situation of which we know very
little even today. In Experiments with Life ItselfA", Francisco
Gonzalez de Canales studies a series of unrelated cases from the
late 1930s to the late 1950s that he refers to as domestic
self-experimentation.
In recent years, revolutionary technical advances have permitted
neuroscientists to map the functioning of the brain in exquisite
detail. Of interest are the new techniques that visually display
cell energy metabolism which is coupled to functional brain
activity in behaving animals. This is the first book dealing with
the application of 2-deoxyglucose and related metabolic mapping
techniques for brain imaging of behavioral and learning functions.
Quantitative autoradiographic techniques based on the use of
exogenous markers include radiolabeled glucose and its analogs,
especially 2-deoxyglucose and fluorodeoxyglucose. Other mapping
techniques are based on the histochemical staining of endogenous
metabolic markers such as cytochrome oxidase, as well as
immunohistochemistry for expression of c-fos genes. In spite of the
great potential capabilities of the new imaging techniques,
relatively few neuroscientists are using this approach to study
brain functions related to behavior. There is a need to review
state-of-the-art applications of these methods in behavioral
neuroscience, and to formulate recommendations for future research
in this area. This book is intended to fulfill these needs by
bringing together leading neuroscientists using metabolic mapping
approaches to elucidate brain mechanisms of behavior. Discussions
are not limited to one animal species, but they cover a broad range
of vertebrates with unique behavioral capabilities.
The classical phenomenon of light scattering is one of the most
studied t- ics in light-matter interaction and, even today,
involves some controversial issues. A present focus of interest for
many researchers is the possibility of obtaining information about
microstructures, for example surface roughness, and the size, shape
and optical properties of particles by means of a n- invasive
technique such as the illumination of these objects with light. One
of their main tasks is to extract the relevant information from a
detailed study of the scattered radiation. This includes:
measurement of the light intensity in di erent directions, analysis
of its polarization, determination of its stat- tics, etc.
Contributionstoresolvingthisproblemareimportantnotonlyfrom the
point of view of increasing basic knowledge but also in their
applications to several elds of industry and technology. Consider,
for example, the pos- bility of distinguishing between di erent
types of atmospheric contaminants, biological contaminants in our
blood, the detection of microdefects in the manufacturing of
semiconductors, magnetic discs and optical components, or the
development of biological sensors. During the period September
11-13, 1998, we brought together a group of international experts
on light scattering at the Summer School of Laredo at the
University of Cantabria. In a series of one-hour lectures, they
discussed

FGP Atelier is a global practice led by Mexican architect Francisco
Gonzalez Pulido whose mission is to contribute to social and
economic advancement through the alignment of the core principles
of Design, Science and Technology. The work of The Atelier is
guided by Transparency, Openness and Freedom. These values are
reflected in the approach to process and collaborations, as well as
in the buildings and spaces that result. Logic, Intuition,
Multidisciplinary Collaboration, Scientific Research and Work
Experience drive the design of Spaces that are Active as well as
Infrastructure and Urban Networks that respond to Atmosphere,
Ecology, Comfort, Economy, Culture and the Technological Context.
In working towards the dissolution of archetypical interventions,
the Experience of these spaces and buildings is valued over
Typology in order to ground the ultimate value in human existence.
Progression presents a series of projects and related essays that
illustrate the principles that guide the work of FGP Atelier.
Through examining these principles, the themes, ideas, and goals
that are common to the projects emerge and provide a means of
understanding how a diverse set of buildings relate as well as what
might come next. The book is divided into three sections: Values,
Network, and Ambition. "Values" is comprised of three chapters that
discuss sustainability, the practice, and ethics. "Network" is
comprised of four chapters that discuss how technical design is
influenced by context, the alternative futures that planning can
offer, the role that infrastructure plays in creating equitable
cities, and challenges facing housing in the future. The final
section, "Ambition" suggests ways that the discipline of
architecture can evolve. Ultimately, the goal of this book is to be
provocative on multiple levels. It should inspire the reader
through the completed buildings executed in often challenging
conditions. At the same time, it should be a catalyst for discourse
and debate regarding what should be built and how a philosophy
guides a practice, the design of future buildings, and the
conservation of existing buildings.
