This book features material presented at the La Rabida 2018
International Scientific Meeting on Nuclear Physics, which was
based on a well-known series of triennial international summer
schools on Nuclear Physics organized from 1982 to 2003 by the Basic
Nuclear Physics group at the University of Seville and latter, from
2009 to 2018, by the University of Seville and the University of
Huelva. The meeting offered graduate students and young researchers
a broad overview of the field of nuclear physics. The book includes
contributions from invited speakers on topics such as a
state-of-the-art nuclear shell model and selected aspects of mass
spectroscopy. Other chapters present an introduction to shell
model, a review of experimental nuclear reactions, a discussion of
the theory of nuclear reactions and an overview of nuclear
medicine. Further, the posters and seminars presented by students
offer fresh perspectives on various problems current in nuclear
physics.
This collection features five peer-reviewed reviews on optimising
rootstock health. The first chapter explores optimising rootstock
health to improve root function, resource-use efficiency,
sustainability and agricultural productivity. The chapter also
presents a case study on tomato rootstocks as a viable strategy to
overcome abiotic stresses in Ghana. The second chapter reviews the
important aspects of tree growth and development in apple
production which are integral to ensure product quality. The
chapter discusses the importance of rootstocks and emphasises the
mechanisms and morphological effects of dwarfing on rootstocks. The
third chapter considers recent advances in the development and
utilisation of fruit tree rootstocks, focussing primarily on
apples. The chapter also reviews rootstock tolerance to both
abiotic and biotic stresses. The fourth chapter discusses advances
in avocado tissue culture for clonal propagation and highlights the
potential of this technology for improving the sustainable supply
of high-quality avocado plants to support future avocado industry
growth. The final chapter addresses the challenges and
opportunities in pear breeding, focussing on pear cultivars, pear
rootstocks and germplasm resources. The chapter also considers the
use of dwarfing as a means of improving particular traits.
This volume covers invited papers presented during the La Rabida
2015 International Scientific Meeting on Nuclear Physics, which can
be considered heir of a well known series of triennial
international summer schools on Nuclear Physics organized from 1982
till 2003 by the Basic Nuclear Physics group in the University of
Sevilla. The La Rabida 2015 meeting offered to graduate students
and young researchers a broad view of the field of Nuclear Physics.
The first invited speaker presented the state-of-the-art of
Relativistic Mean Field calculations. The second set of notes
covers selected topics in gamma ray spectroscopy with exotic
nuclei. The third speaker presented an introduction to the subject
of severe accidents in nuclear power plants. In the fourth set of
notes, the author illustrated how to use laser spectroscopy to
determine very important observables of atomic nuclei. The fifth
speaker devoted its notes to explain several aspects of neutrino
physics. Finally, the sixth speaker presented an overview of
nuclear medicine and radiodiagnostic. In addition to this, the
inclusion of the posters and seminars presented by the students
gives a fresh and ample perspective on the many different problems
of interest nowadays for the Nuclear Physics community.
The patent disconnection between the institutions of the European
Union and the citizens of Europe has been widely attributed by
political leaders and scholars to a 'communications gap', that is,
to the way EU affairs are mediated by the media, and to the
apparent lack of interest by national elites in conveying the
importance of Europe. This book challenges this 'mediation theory'
and suggests instead a cultural and systemic explanation for the
distant and bureaucratic character of the European Union.
Apportioning the blame for the communication gap to the media and
national politicians neglects two real deficits which prevent
Europe from enjoying a vibrant public sphere: a deficit of
domesticisation, a popular disconnection with the idea of the EU,
and a deficit of politicisation with European politics, it being
difficult to categorise as through traditional methods of 'left vs.
right'. This book suggests that popular disengagement with the EU
is a consequence of the fact that Europe as a cultural community is
an interdependent continent rather than a nation and that, as an
political institution, the EU is a pseudo-confederation full of
anti-publicity bias, elite-driven integration, corporatism and
diplomacy. The result is a book that is an essential read for
students and scholars of political communication and of the
European Union.

The Spanish Civil War, a precursor to World War II, was a testing
ground of not only political might between feuding factions in
Europe but also military hardware-modern tanks and aircraft from
Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy, for instance. The civil
war, which began in 1936 and ended in 1939, witnessed more than
500,000 deaths. One volunteer was Francisco Perez Lopez, Spanish by
birth but raised in France. He began as a recruit at the age of
twenty and emerged a platoon leader in roadside skirmishes,
firefights in villages and forests, and in the Battle of the Ebro,
the last stand for the Republican cause. He became a prisoner, a
medic, a favorite among nuns, and then an escapee-his feats for
survival are nothing less than genius. Gary Soto's condensed yet
artful and sensitive retelling is a gripping tale of human dignity
and one man's unflagging commitment to justice.
