Il 1989, fu l'anno in cui Fortini decise di sistemare i suoi vari appunti ed articoli sulla traduzione del testo letterario e presentare la sintesi dei suoi interventi in materia traduttologica nella forma di un seminario da svolgersi in 4 lezioni distinte presso l'Istituto Filosofico di Napoli, ai cui programmi annuali egli era stato invitato a collaborare. Fortini rispondeva, in tal modo, ad un crescente interesse verso la traduzione, intervenendo sulle teorie sviluppatesi intorno ad essa in Europa ed in America, e coglieva l'occasione per elaborarne una sua propria, discorrendo con gli studenti e gli accademici presenti. Il testo delle lezioni fortiniane sulla traduzione, presentato in questa prima edizione del maggio 2004, a cura di Erminia Passannanti, borsista del corso napoletano, presenta il contenuto delle lezioni di Fortini nello stile di una trascrizione diretta dal supporto audio originale e ne conserva il fascino dell'esposizione orale.
