Originally published in 1945, this book contains the French text of
the 'Maximes' of Francois de la Rochefoucauld, which were first
published anonymously in 1665. La Rochefoucauld himself added to
the text many times during his life, and the version published here
contains 641 of his maxims, along with the prefaces to the editions
of 1665 and 1678 and two biographical portraits of the Duke in
French by himself and by his fellow writer the Cardinal de Retz,
Jean Francois Paul de Gondi. This book will be of value to anyone
with an interest in French literature and moral philosophy.
Originally published in 1933, this book presents an English
translation of the French aristocrat Francois de La Rochefoucauld's
travel memoir, Melanges sur l'Angleterre. The text provides a
detailed account of English manners and customs, together with a
record of two journeys through Suffolk and Norfolk undertaken by La
Rochefoucauld during 1784. An editorial introduction, comprehensive
textual notes and illustrative figures are also included. This is a
highly readable book that will be of value to anyone with an
interest in travel writing and the history of East Anglia.
When Francois de la Rochefoucauld and his brother Alexandre visited
Suffolk in 1784, the events which were to lead to the French
Revolution in 1789 were already in train. Francois' father, the duc
de Liancourt, Grand Master of the Wardrobe at Louis XVI's court,
was well placed to appreciate the dangers of the situation in
France, and it must have been with anxious hopefulness that he sent
his sons (Francois was then 18) to England for a year to appreciate
the ordering of these things in a country which had experienced a
revolution over a century earlier. Such reflections are never far
below the surface of this otherwise cheerful journal of a year
abroad, which gives a vivid picture of English provincial life;
Francois' observations range over such diverse subjects as English
customs and manners and methods of agriculture and stockbreeding,
and include a lively account of a general election. Norman Scarfe,
the well-known historian of Suffolk and beyond, provides a spirited
translation of Francois' journal; it is complemented by numerous
illustrations.
'Our virtues are, most often, only vices in disguise.' Deceptively
brief and insidiously easy to read, La Rochefoucauld's shrewd,
unflattering analyses of human behaviour have influenced writers,
thinkers, and public figures as various as Voltaire, Proust, de
Gaulle, Nietzsche, and Conan Doyle. The author gave himself the
following advice: 'The reader's best policy is to assume that none
of these maxims is directed at him, and that he is the sole
exception...After that, I guarantee that he will be the first to
subscribe to them.' This is the fullest collection of La
Rochefoucauld's writings ever published in English, and includes
the first complete translation of the Reflexions diverses
(Miscellaneous Reflections). A table of alternative maxim numbers
and an index of topics help the reader to locate any maxim quickly
and to appreciate the full range of La Rochefoucauld's thought on
any of his favourite themes, such as self-love, vice and virtue,
love and jealousy, friendship and self-interest, passion and pride.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly
growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by
advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve
the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own:
digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works
in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these
high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts
are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries,
undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of
Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical
understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking.
Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel
Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and
moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade.
The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and
Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a
debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below
