Eternity by the Stars - An Astronomical Hypothesis (Paperback): Louis Auguste Blanqui Eternity by the Stars - An Astronomical Hypothesis (Paperback)
Louis Auguste Blanqui; Translated by Frank Chouraqui; Introduction by Frank Chouraqui
R516 R422 Discovery Miles 4 220 Save R94 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In a century replete with radical politics, final liberations, historical codas, and dreams of eternity, the shadowy figure of Louis-Auguste Blanqui, the constant revolutionary, wrote Eternity by the Stars in the last months of 1871 while incarcerated in Fort du Taureau, a marine cell of the English Channel. In the midst of contemplating his confinement, Blanqui devises a simple calculation in which the infinity of time is confronted with the finite number of possible events to suggest a most radical conclusion: every chain of events is bound to repeat itself eternally in space and time. Our lives are being lived an infinity of times across the confines of the universe, and death, defeat, success and glory are never final. For the world is nothing but the play of probabilities on the great stage of time and space. By straddling the boundaries of hyperrealism and hallucinatory thinking, Blanqui's hypothesis offers a deep, tragic, and heartfelt reflection on the place of the human in the universe, the value of action, and the aching that lies at the heart of every modern soul. This first critical edition of Blanqui's incantatory text in English features an extended introduction by Frank Chouraqui. Exploring sources of Blanqui's thinking in his intellectual context, Chouraqui traces the legacy of the text in critiques of modernity devoting particular attention to the figures of Nietzsche, Walter Benjamin, and Borges. It features copious illuminating annotations that bring out the web of connections which interlace the great marginal figure of Blanqui with more than two millennia of European culture.

Porosity between Politics and the Economy (Hardcover): Egidius Berns Porosity between Politics and the Economy (Hardcover)
Egidius Berns; Edited by Frank Chouraqui
R2,676 Discovery Miles 26 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Porosity between Politics and the Economy addresses the relationships between politics and the economy in deeply original ways. It is motivated by a sense of urgency derived from both the failure of modern capitalism to fulfill its promise and the consequences of the environmental crisis. Egidius Berns argues that the relations between politics and the economy are porous, and subsequently, he investigates the consequences of this porosity. By mapping out of a number of conceptual fault lines that constitute the weaknesses of post-industrial capitalist societies, Berns provides a fresh look at the current crisis of western capitalism and democracy. Finally, the book offers a preliminary elucidation of a path to reform the relations between the economy and politics, by analyzing the web of conceptual connections that link them and inform any possible configuration between them. It finds a way into the future in a certain ethics of restraint and combativeness.

The Body and Embodiment - A Philosophical Guide (Hardcover): Frank Chouraqui The Body and Embodiment - A Philosophical Guide (Hardcover)
Frank Chouraqui
R3,747 Discovery Miles 37 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Perfect for use at advanced undergraduate and graduate level, this is the first text to offer students a unified narrative regarding the place of the body in Western thinking. The book investigates the ways in which the fact of human embodiment makes the notion of ambiguity central to all major areas of philosophy. The body is both active and passive, powerful and vulnerable, and it provides both access through perception and limitation through localisation. As such, it fundamentally informs ontological, political, ethical and epistemological issues. The book takes as its starting point the devaluation of the body by philosophers from Plato to Descartes and then focuses on several dimensions of the body as investigated by post-Kantian philosophy through a discussion of the intentional body, embodied cognition and the politicization of the body. The book engages with both the 'Continental' and 'Anglo-American' philosophical traditions and includes a broad range of sources and texts. The unified approach and clear writing make this lively text accessible to those working in other disciplines such as Anthropology, Cultural Studies and Gender Studies.

Ambiguity and the Absolute - Nietzsche and Merleau-Ponty on the Question of Truth (Hardcover): Frank Chouraqui Ambiguity and the Absolute - Nietzsche and Merleau-Ponty on the Question of Truth (Hardcover)
Frank Chouraqui
R1,466 Discovery Miles 14 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Friedrich Nietzsche and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Chouraqui argues, are linked by how they conceive the question of truth. Although both thinkers criticize the traditional co ncept of truth as objectivity, they both find that rejecting it does not solve the problem. What is it in our natural existence that gave rise to the notion of truth?
The answer to that question is threefold. First, Nietzsche and Merleau-Ponty both propose a genealogy of "truth" in which to exist means to make implicit truth claims. Second, both seek to recover the preobjective ground from which truth as an erroneous concept arose. Finally, this attempt at recovery leads both thinkers to ontological considerations regarding how we must conceive of a being whose structure allows for the existence of the belief in truth. In conclusion, Chouraqui suggests that both thinkers' investigations of the question of truth lead them to conceive of being as the process of self-falsification by which indeterminate being presents itself as determinate.
