John Carter is the hero of Burroughs' Barsoom series. He first
appeared in Under the Moons of Mars (later retitled A Princess of
Mars) the story which catapaulted Burroughs into the limelight. It
was the first of many novels and several sequels followed over the
next three decades, further extending Burroughs' vision of Barsoom.
The world of Barsoom is a romantic vision of a dying Mars, based on
now outdated scientific ideas made popular by Astronomer Percival
Lowell in the early 20th century. While depicting many outlandish
inventions, and advanced technology, it is a savage, 'frontier'
world, of honor, noble sacrifice and constant struggle, where
martial prowess is paramount, and where many races fight over
dwindling resources. It is filled with lost cities, heroic
adventures and undiscovered ancient secrets. The series has
inspired a number of well known science fiction writers, and also
key scientists involved in both space exploration and the search
for extraterrestrial life. It has informed and been adapted by many
writers, in novels, short stories, television and film.

It was in 1880 and 1881 that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote "Treasure
Island," which was begun at Braemar, Scotland, where his father
aided him with suggestions from his own seafaring experiences. It
was finished in the course of his second visit to Davos in the
winter of 1881-1882. "Treasure Island," which appeared when the
author was thirty-one, was his first long romance, and it brought
to him his first taste of popular success, when the story was
published in book form. It was in October 1881, that this story
began to appear as a serial in an English magazine called "Young
Folks." The title then was "The Sea Cook, or Treasure Island," but
when published in book form in May 1883, the name was simply
"Treasure Island," a name which has taken its place among the
titles of far older classics. This edition contains the superb
illustrations of Louis Rhead, which were first published in 1915.

1904. Glasgow's realistic fiction novels often showed the female
characters as stronger than the male characters. It was this new
type of Southern fiction that made Ellen Glasgow one of the major
writers of her time. The vantage point from which most of her
nineteen novels were written was her native home of Richmond,
Virginia. She received the Pulitzer prize in 1942 for In This Our
Life. In 1900, with the publication of The Voice of the People,
Glasgow began a series of novels which came to compose her
ambitious fictional social history of Virginia. This series
includes The Battle Ground, a Civil War novel, and this volume, The
Deliverance, which tells of the aftermath of the Civil War, when
the Southern social order underwent wrenching change. See other

1916. Charles Alden Seltzer was one of the most successful and
prolific Western writers of his day. His books are now lauded for
their authenticity, and were widely reprinted and translated during
his lifetime, and for several decades after. A number of his novels
were adapted for the screen beginning in the silent-film era. The
Range Boss begins: Getting up the shoulder of the mesa was no easy
job, but judging from the actions and appearance of wiry pony and
rider it was a job that would be accomplished. For part of the
distance, it is true, the man thought it best to dismount, drive
the pony ahead of him, and follow on foot. At length, however, they
reached the top of the mesa, and after a breathing spell the man
mounted and rode across the tableland.
