In pragmatics, it is widely accepted that the overall meaning of an utterance performed as part of a verbal interchange is basically underdetermined by the meaning of the sentence uttered. What counts as having been said for most contemporary authors goes far beyond sentence meaning. Rather, it has to be considered as a complex utterance level combining semantic knowledge and context-driven, pragmatic information as an integrated whole. The focus of the present book lies on central questions about the nature, the function and the acquisition of pragmatic inferencing strategies. The question of the relation between the explicit and the implicit side of verbal communication and its mutual delimitation is addressed. What is the character of pragmatic inferences, wherever they may be situated in a descriptive model? Are they nonce inferences arising anew in each act of communication, or do we have to conceive of them as based on regularities and conventions? What is an adequate model of the acquisition of the skills which are relevant for mastering the inferential processes leading to an adequate interpretation of utterances? And what is the relation between a theory of pragmatic enrichment and optimality theory with an OT pragmatics as a possible result?

Pragmatic Syntax is a research program deriving the explanation of the syntactic form of utterances from underlying principles of speech action. This enables it to focus on linguistic phenomena necessarily phased out in non-pragmatic approaches. Among these are specific word order regularities, elliptic sentences, foregrounding in sentences, and the use of phraseological forms. The articles in the volume approaching the connection between language use and the syntactic form of utterances from various perspectives, but are all informed by a joint commitment to the idea of using pragmatics to get to the bottom of syntax.

Der Begriff Implikatur ist in den letzten Jahren in das Zentrum der linguistischen Theoriebildung gerA1/4ckt. Nicht nur in der Pragmatik, sondern auch in der Semantik und der Syntax spielt er fA1/4r die ErklArung linguistischer Erscheinungen eine wichtige Rolle. In dem Sammelband sind Arbeiten aus den unterschiedlichen Teildisziplinen der Linguistik vertreten, denen das Ziel gemeinsam ist, den Begriff der Implikatur zu klAren und die Anwendbarkeit auf das spezifische Gebiet zu prA1/4fen.

Stadte sind unter anderem Raume fur symbolische Artefakte wie zum Beispiel Texte, die in unterschiedlichsten Auspragungen und verschiedensten Funktionen auftreten. Diese Texte bilden zusammen mit Bildern oder anderen grafischen Konfigurationen eine zeichenhafte Einheit. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes nehmen oeffentliche Kurztexte unter Berucksichtigung ihrer Einbettung in multimodale Umgebungen in den Blick. Ihre Beschreibung erfolgt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven wie der Text- und Diskurslinguistik, der Syntax, Semantik und Pragmatik. Berucksichtigt werden auch Formen der Online-Kommunikation sowie Fragen der Textubersetzung von Live-Tickern. In allen Beitragen geht es um das Zusammenspiel von minimaler sprachlicher Form mit bildlicher Information und dem vorausgesetzten oder aktivierten Wissen der Rezipierenden.

Kurze und Multimodalitat sind Charakteristika sowohl historischer als auch zeitgenoessischer Kurztexte, die in den Beitragen dieses Bandes im Hinblick auf grammatisch-syntaktische und pragmatische Erscheinungen analysiert werden. Im Fokus stehen Phanomene der Informationsstrukturierung, Intertextualitat und Bild-Text-Beziehungen wie auch andere Aspekte wie Wortspiel, Nicht-Gesagtes oder Code-Switching. Ebenso grosse Bandbreite weisen die untersuchten Kurztexte und -formen auf: Politische Slogans, Demospruche, Hashtags und Memes, Titelseiten, Leads und Vorspanntexte, Werbetexte, Bildunterschriften und Filmplakate, Stammbucheintrage und Hausspruche.
