Der vorliegende Band ist eine im Buchhandel nicht erhaltliche Sonderausgabe fur die Bundeszentrale bzw. Landeszentralen fur politische Bildung. Der Inhalt entspricht Teil 2 ("Die Beziehungen im 20. Jahrhundert") des Originalwerkes "Amerika und die Deutschen. Bestandsaufnahme einer 300jahrigen Geschich te"; lediglich die beiden Beitrage, die dort das VIII. Kapitel bilden, konnten hier nicht aufgenommen werden. Das vollstandige Inhaltsverzeichnis des Original bandes findet sich am SchluB dieser Sonderausgabe. Die Beitrage zu "Amerika und die Deutschen" sind die iiberarbeiteten Vor trage, die am 3. -6. Oktober 1983 auf der, Tricentennial Conference of German American History, Politics and Culture' an der University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia gehalten wurden. Die Konferenz war Teil der Feiern zum 300jahri gen Jubilaum der deutschen Einwanderung nach Nordamerika und wurde durch groBzugige Unterstutzung von Institutionen in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ermoglicht. Wahrend die meisten deutschen Teilnehmer selbst eine deutsche Version ihres auf englisch gehaltenen Vortrages anfertigten, gebuhrt Wolfgang Helbich das Verdienst, den Hauptteil der Konferenzbeitrage ins Deutsche ubersetzt zu haben."

Frank Trommler Was eine Kultur als selbstverstlindlich voraussetzt, muB in einer anderen erst definiert und bewiesen werden. Germanistik in den USA ist nicht dasselbe Fach wie in Deutschland, auch wenn viele Inhalte gleich lauten. Dieser Band versucht, mit einer aktuellen Bestandsaufnahme zugleich etwas von den andersgearteten Tradi- tionen und Bedingungen der Disziplin in den Vereinigten Staaten erkennbar zu machen. Er ist in dieser Form ohne Vorliiufer und versteht sich als eine Darstellung fiir deutsche Leser, deren Inter- esse am Gegenstand nicht vorausgesetzt werden kann und durch eine langatmige historische Untersuchung kaum gefOrdert wiirde. In der Kiirze soil sich in diesem FaIle nicht nur Wiirze, sondern auch Zweckdienlichkeit kundtun. DaB Geisteswissenschaftler von sich selbst reden, auch wenn sie nicht von sich reden, ist bestens bekannt; reden sie dann auch noch von ihrer Disziplin, ist die Idio- synkrasie voIlkommen. Obwohl man letzteres neuerdings ohne viel ZOgern zur Gegenstandsbestimmung wissenschaftlichen Ar- beitens hinzurechnet, ist es hier auf ein MindestmaB beschrankt worden, auf die Gefahr hin, daB wichtige Aspekte des germanisti- schen AIltags in Amerika unter den Tisch fallen. Besser der Vor- wurf, es Mtte mehr sein kOnnen, als der, es Mtte weniger idiosyn- kratisch sein sollen.
