Advances in our scientific understanding and technological power in
recent decades have dramatically amplified our capacity to
intentionally manipulate complex ecological and biological systems.
An implication of this is that biological and ecological problems
are increasingly understood and approached from an engineering
perspective. In environmental contexts, this is exemplified in the
pursuits of geoengineering, designer ecosystems, and conservation
cloning. In human health contexts, it is exemplified in the
development of synthetic biology, bionanotechnology, and human
enhancement technologies. Designer Biology: The Ethics of
Intensively Engineering Biological and Ecological Systems consists
of thirteen chapters (twelve of them original to the collection)
that address the ethical issues raised by technological
intervention and design across a broad range of biological and
ecological systems. Among the technologies addressed are
geoengineering, human enhancement, sex selection, genetic
modification, and synthetic biology. The aim of the collection is
to advance and enrich our understanding of the ethical issues
raised by these technologies, as well as to identify general
lessons about the ethics of engineering complex biological and
ecological systems that can be applied as new technologies and
practices emerge. The insights that emerge will be especially
valuable to students and scholars of environmental ethics,
bioethics, or technology ethics.
For courses in Criminology, Criminological Theory, Theories of
Crime, Crime in America. The authoritative resource for
criminological theory. Criminological Theory, 6/e provides concise
chronological coverage of all the major criminological theories.
The text puts theories into socio-historical context to illustrate
how and why certain theories evolved, why they were popular at
particular points in time, and how they are still active and
influential today. The authors also examine the research and
policies that were inspired by each theory. Specifically designed
to suit one-semester courses, students and instructors alike will
appreciate the text's straight-forward approach, clear language,
and comprehensive coverage.

It's time to end the world. Collects ORDINARY GODS #7-12

American-German relations are in transition. A number of
explanations have been given for this fact: some focusing on the
personalities of politicians, some on political and attitudinal
disparities, still others pointing to disagreements about foreign
policy objectives since the end of the Cold War and 9/11. This
volume, written by American and German scholarly experts, while not
denying the relevance and validity of such explanations of the
transatlantic estrangement, address the extent, resilience, and the
causes of misconceptions, misunderstandings, and confrontations in
the transatlantic relationship as well as highlighting
commonalities and enduring ties between the U.S. and Germany. The
chapters analyze domestic and foreign policies, political cultures,
and compare trends in business relations, migration, culture,
education, journalism, law, and religion. The authors contend that
differences in political cultures, societal priorities, and
national interests are inevitable, perhaps even desirable and not
necessarily an obstacle to a continuous and mutually beneficial
exchange or even the development of a special relationship. But
first of all they need to be acknowledged, then understood, and
finally dealt with in an atmosphere of mutual trust recognizing
common ground. The book ends with suggestions about how to deal
with different interpretations and perceptions in order to reclaim
a strategic partnership for progressive changes in an increasingly
multipolar world.
David Langton, a young man in his mid-twenties returns home,
clearly in a state of great agitation. When he hears his parents
Joan and Richard, returning from a dinner dance he lies and tells
them he has been in all evening. Then his eighteen year old
brother, Charles, arrives with the news that there has been a
murder on the cliff top. Richard, the editor of the local paper
goes out to the scene of the crime with his younger son, to get the
story.2 women, 4 men
This highly acclaimed criminology text presents an up-to-date
review of rational choice theories, including deterrence, shaming,
and routine activities. It also incorporates current examples of
deterrence research regarding domestic violence, drunk driving, and
capital punishment, and features thought-provoking discussion of
the relativity of crime. The authors explore the crime problem, its
context, and causes of crime. The organization of the text reflects
the fact that the etiology of crime must be at the heart of
criminology. It examines contemporary efforts to redefine crime by
focusing on family violence, hate crimes, white-collar misconduct
with violent consequences, and other forms of human behavior often
neglected by criminologists. Extensive discussion of evolving laws
is included, and while the prevalence of the scientific method in
the field of criminology is highlighted, the impact of ideology on
explanations of crime is the cornerstone of the book.
This dictionary covers marketing communications in the broadest
sense, including advertising, but also extending to public
relations which concerns many organizations not involved in
marketing and which have little to do with advertising. Entries
have been gathered from around the world, and this dictionary will
therefore be valuable to those operating in an international
environ ment where different term, or terms with different
spellings, are used. There are also terms with different meanings,
depending on their country of origin. For example, in the UK
newspapers are called press media, while in the USA the term print
media is more usual. In the UK, print usually applies to printed
items, such as sales or edu ;;ational literature. Likewise, there
are big differences between European and American broadcasting
systems, and sponsored radio or TV can mean different things around
the world. Outdoor advertising also has different terminology in
different countries, especially in North America and the UK. In
many cases, alternative British and American terms are given, while
some are either European or American. Some terminology is specific
to a certain country. Entries have been collected from all parts of
the world, including the oramedia or folk media of the Third World.
Financial terms have been included because of their increasing im
portance in advertising and public relations, and the dictionary
reflects the increasing relevance of satellites and computers."

extremely influential in shaping the skyline of the modern,
international city. This volume, featuring thirty-five daring new

Square Hotel, The Belaire, Trump Palace (with I.M. Pei), along with

This book covers the capture and imprisonment of Lieutenant Ronald
Williams, by the Japanese, on Java in 1942. Williams' artillery
regiment had set sail from the Clyde to fight the Nazi in the
Middle East, but were then diverted to the Far East after the
Japanese invaded Malaya. Following the sudden surrender of
Singapore, Java was next in the firing line and quickly succumbed.
Williams' and his remaining regiment were taken into captivity,
which led to increasing levels of hardship and brutality. Stories
and anecdotes leading up to the allied surrender and first nine
months of imprisonment are included.
My Little Town turns the Yankee-comes-to-Dixie literary genre
outside in, examining Marion, Alabama, through the eyes of someone
who should never have been living there and yet found himself there
for more than a decade. With a keen appreciation of its peculiarly
Southern tableau, the book lovingly scrutinizes an Alabama village
short chapter by short chapter, accompanied by photographer Jerry
Siegel's captivating work from the Black Belt. Funeral visitations,
poisoned soup luncheons, Pilgrimage hosting, supper clubs, family
feuds, Obama Day parades, politics, Jews, and chicken salad recipes
are all treated with a voice of singular precision and affection.
Simultaneously author David Tipmore couples this fresh view of
Southern small-town life with his own narrative of a worldly urban
nomad who hopes to find a home in one of the most isolated areas of
the United States, peculiarly defined by its racial history and
regional mores. By conflating the two stories, My Little Town
challenges the reader as much as the author, raising serious
questions about our ability as Americans to transcend our regional
identities and cultural complexities.
The Luminary. The Prodigy. The Brute. The Trickster. The Innovator.

human death and reincarnation. Christopher is 22. He's got two
loving parents and a 12-year-old sister. He works at a paint store.
He's in therapy. He's one of the Five. To save everyone he cares
about, Christopher will have to embark on a globe-spanning quest,
reconnect with his past lives, and do the unthinkable: become a god
again. Collects ORDINARY GODS #1-6
