Dividend Policy explores the puzzle presented by dividends:
irrational and subject to fashion, yet popular and desirable, they
remain a priority among managers, even while perceived as largely
symbolic. After exploring the history of dividend payments, from
the emergence of the modern corporation to current perspectives, it
traces the evolution of academic models on dividend policy. Here
the authors review models of symmetric and asymmetric information
before analyzing academia's accomplishments in solving the dividend
puzzle.
Related subjects, such as valuation and wealth distribution, round
out the authors' presentation about new ways to think about one of
the most intriguing subjects in financial economics.
* The only comprehensive study of dividend policy
* Covers the historical evolution of dividends and academic
research on dividend policy
* Presents new ways of thinking about dividends and dividend policy
The acclaimed book that illuminates our world and its politics by revealing why bullshit is more dangerous than lying.
One of the most prominent features of our world is that there is so much bullshit. Yet we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, how it’s distinct from lying, what functions it serves, and what it means. In his acclaimed bestseller On Bullshit, Harry Frankfurt, who was one of the world’s most influential moral philosophers, explores this important subject, which has become a central problem of politics and our world.
With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the bullshitter’s capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that the truth matters. Because of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.
Remarkably prescient and insightful, On Bullshit is a small book that explains a great deal about our time.
Moral injury has developed in earnest since 2009 within psychology
and military studies, especially through work with veterans of the
U.S. military's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. A major part of this
work is the attempt to identify means of healing, recovery, and
repair for those morally injured by their experiences in combat (or
similar situations). What this volume does is to provide insight
into the identification of moral injury, the development of the
notion, attempts to work with those affected, emerging ideas about
moral injury, portraits of moral injury in the past and present,
and, especially, what creative engagement with moral injury might
look like from a variety of perspectives. As such, it will be an
important resource for Christian ministers, chaplains, health care
workers, and other providers and caregivers who serve afflicted
communities.
This significant contribution to our knowledge of Egyptian
Christianity in the late third century includes discussion of the
Apocalypse of Elijah as religious literature; the Egyptian
provenance of the document; its social and historical context; a
complete translation. Frankfurter s analysis of The Apocalypse of
Elijah is a detailed and creative piece of work. His mastery of
literary theory and the social-scientific method is evident
throughout, and the union of the two methods in this work is
impressive. James E. Goehring, Mary Washington College This book is
a remarkable piece of work. Frankfurter makes a convincing case for
the use of native Egyptian prophetic traditions in the Apocalypse
of Elijah. Birger A. Pearson, University of California, Santa

Her sensual Nanas-buxom, colorful female figures laid the
foundation for her international success beyond the art world: Niki
de Saint Phalle. But the self-taught artist's creative spectrum is
much broader, and her unconventional oeuvre, ranging from painting
and drawing to assemblages, performances, theatre, film, and
architecture, is more subversive and critical of society than is
widely assumed. Based on her efforts to process her own feelings,
she addressed social and political issues, critically questioning
institutions and role models in ways that are as relevant today as
they have ever been. The exhibition and the publication shed new
light on the artist's exceptional personality and uncover the
wide-ranging oeuvre of the popular outsider-that is always
surprising and eccentric, emotional, dark and brutal, humorous and
cheerful.

Individual treats finance as a social and cultural process,
exploring the unseen side of academic discourse and the many
obstacles the deeply entrenched elite puts in the way of
alternative thinking. Opening with a detailed discussion of the
role of ideology in the perpetuation of the limited methodological
bias of the profession toward markets, the book then examines the
more specific effects of such ideological limitations on
theoretical and empirical research in finance. The authors develop
alternative ways to examine finance both as a profession and as a
field of inquiry. This book will be of particular value to
researchers and practitioners working in finance, as well as those

Economic inequality is one of the most divisive issues of our time.
Yet few would argue that inequality is a greater evil than poverty.
The poor suffer because they don't have enough, not because others
have more, and some have far too much. So why do many people appear
to be more distressed by the rich than by the poor? In this
provocative book, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of On
Bullshit presents a compelling and unsettling response to those who
believe that the goal of social justice should be economic equality
or less inequality. Harry Frankfurt, one of the most influential
moral philosophers in the world, argues that we are morally
obligated to eliminate poverty--not achieve equality or reduce
inequality. Our focus should be on making sure everyone has a
sufficient amount to live a decent life. To focus instead on
inequality is distracting and alienating. At the same time,
Frankfurt argues that the conjunction of vast wealth and poverty is
offensive. If we dedicate ourselves to making sure everyone has
enough, we may reduce inequality as a side effect. But it's
essential to see that the ultimate goal of justice is to end
poverty, not inequality. A serious challenge to cherished beliefs
on both the political left and right, On Inequality promises to
have a profound impact on one of the great debates of our time.

Having outlined a theory of bullshit and falsehood, Harry G.
Frankfurt turns to what lies beyond them: the truth, a concept not
as obvious as some might expect.
Our culture's devotion to bullshit may seem much stronger than our
apparently halfhearted attachment to truth. Some people
(professional thinkers) won't even acknowledge "true" and "false"
as meaningful categories, and even those who claim to love truth
cause the rest of us to wonder whether they, too, aren't simply
full of it. Practically speaking, many of us deploy the truth only
when absolutely necessary, often finding alternatives to be more
saleable, and yet somehow civilization seems to be muddling along.
But where are we headed? Is our fast and easy way with the facts
actually crippling us? Or is it "all good"? Really, what's the use
of truth, anyway?
With the same leavening wit and commonsense wisdom that animates
his pathbreaking work "On Bullshit," Frankfurt encourages us to
take another look at the truth: there may be something there that
is perhaps too plain to notice but for which we have a mostly
unacknowledged yet deep-seated passion. His book will have sentient
beings across America asking, "The truth--why didn't I think of
that?"
A clear, accessible exploration of how and why we love by prominent
philosopher and bestselling author Harry Frankfurt In The Reasons
of Love, leading moral philosopher and bestselling author Harry
Frankfurt argues that the key to a fulfilled life is to pursue
wholeheartedly what one cares about, that love is the most
authoritative form of caring, and that the purest form of love is,
in a complicated way, self-love. Through caring, we infuse the
world with meaning. Caring provides us with stable ambitions and
concerns; it shapes the framework of aims and interests within
which we lead our lives. Frankfurt goes on to explain that the most
important form of caring is love, a nonvoluntary, disinterested
concern for the flourishing of what is loved. And he contends that
the purest form of love is self-love. This sounds perverse, but
self-love-as distinct from self-indulgence-is at heart a
disinterested concern for whatever it is that the person loves. The
most elementary form of self-love is nothing more than the desire
of a person to love. Insofar as this is true, self-love is simply a
commitment to finding meaning in our lives.
Integritat richten."
