HAFNER Schizophrenia Research Unit, Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim, Germany The present volume contains the lectures and invited discussions of the sympo sium on "Risk and protective factors in schizophrenia - towards a conceptual model of the disease process," which was held at the International Science Forum of the University of Heidelberg from October 25 to 27, 200l. They are supple mented by a "Summary and outlook," in which Peter Jones gives a brief overview of the results and perspectives featured in the presentations and discussions. The contributions and discussions reflect the open-minded and creative atmosphere at the meeting. The systematically structured program of the symposium continued the tradition of the Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia symposia, which were th started in 1986 on the occasion of the 600 anniversary of the University of Hei delberg and which are co-organized with Prof. Wagner Farid Gattaz/Sao Paulo. The aim of these symposia and their proceedings volumes 6,8-10] has been to reflect the state of the art in schizophrenia research at their time, and they have successfully done so. In contrast, the present symposium pursued a more lim ited objective and was of a different type. It brought together, around a large table at the International Science Forum in Heidelberg, 22 invited speakers and dis cussants and an equal number of young scientists working in the research fields in question, who were thus given an opportunity to listen and to participate."
Diesem Buch liegt der Gedanke zugrunde, dass zunehmende jugendliche Risikoverhaltensweisen - wie Drogenmissbrauch, nicht-suizidale Selbstverletzung und antisoziales oder suizidales Verhalten - es Heranwachsenden ermoeglichen, Entwicklungsaufgaben wie Identitatsbildung und Selbstwertregulation zu erfullen. Narzisstische Selbstausbeutung, Mobilitatsaufgaben, Flexibilitat und die Herausforderungen der neuen Medien uben sozialen Druck auf die Eltern aus, lenken ab und belasten ihre psychischen Ressourcen, was wiederum den emotionalen Dialog mit ihren Kindern verandert oder gar zerstoert. Erleben Kinder selbst Vernachlassigung und mangelnde emotionale Bindung - und damit fehlende Selbstregulationsfahigkeit - sind Risikoverhaltensweisen die Folge. Das Buch kombiniert verschiedene Sichtweisen aus dem psychologischen, sozialen und metatheoretischen Bereich. Es besteht aus drei Teilen: Entwicklungsprobleme junger Menschen, Diagnose von Risikoverhaltensweisen im nosologischen Rahmen und Darstellung der neuen Morbiditat mit einer Zunahme der Symptompravalenz. Das Buch eroertert auch die Bedrohung durch die Beschleunigung der sozialen Prozesse und die Risiken der postmodernen Gesellschaft.

This book is based on the idea that increasing juvenile risk behaviours - like substance abuse, nonsuicidal self-injury, and antisocial or suicidal behaviour - allow adolescents to fulfill developmental tasks like identity-formation and regulation of self-worth. Narcissistic self-exploitation, mobility tasks, flexibility and the challenges of new media exert social pressure on parental figures, distracting and putting strain on their mental resources, which in turn changes and even destroys the emotional dialogue with their offspring. If children themselves experience neglect and lack of emotional bonding - resulting in a lack of self-regulating capacities - risk behaviours are the consequence. The book combines different views in the psychological, social and metatheoretical domains. It consists of three parts: developmental problems of young people, diagnosis of risk behaviours in the nosological framework, and presentation of new morbidity with an increase in symptom prevalence. The book also discusses the threat of the acceleration of social processes and the risks of postmodern society.
Das Essential vermittelt eine neue Betrachtungsweise in Bezug auf die Psychotherapie von Jugendlichen. Diese sollte nicht nur nosologisch ausgerichtet sein, sondern in der Indikation zu therapeutischen Massnahmen daruber hinaus auch eine strukturelle und funktionelle Analyse der Symptomatik berucksichtigen, um den Entwicklungsaufgaben, Lebensthemen und dem familiaren beziehungsweise ausserfamiliaren Kontext - also den aktuellen Lebensbedingungen - der Jugendlichen Rechnung zu tragen. Kybernetische Modelle zum zielgerichteten Verhalten erlauben funktionelle Beschreibungen von Symptomverflechtungen, die sich einer direkten therapeutischen Beeinflussung entziehen und nur durch das Auffinden innerer Ziele, in deren Dienst sie stehen, uber Verhaltensalternativen verandert werden koennen.
Neurowissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Verstandnis von Traumen, wie etwa der Nachweis, dass Traume als intensivierte Tagtraume verstanden werden koennen, regen an, sich mit ahnlichen Ideen in alteren Traumtheorien neu auseinanderzusetzen, so zum Beispiel mit denen von C. G. Jung. Dabei gilt es, Verbindungen herzustellen und herauszuarbeiten, wie dieser imaginative Blickwinkel den Umgang mit Traumen beeinflusst und umgekehrt. Unter dem Gesamtthema des UEbergangs werden verschiedene Aspekte des Elternwerdens und der kindlichen Entwicklung dargestellt. Grundlegende Zusammenhange zwischen Immunsystem und Gehirn bilden die Basis eines neuen psychosomatischen Verstandnisses, das durch aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse der Interaktion von Genetik und Umwelt erganzt wird. Elternwerden und die damit verbundenen seelischen Anpassungsprozesse bilden wiederum die Grundlage einer gelingenden Eltern-Kind-Interaktion. Die Orientierung am Kind und seinen Bedurfnissen ist der Leitfaden fur eine kindgerechte Erziehung und Erziehungsunterstutzung. Fur den UEbergang vom Sauglings- zum Kleinkindalter werden die psychophysiologischen und entwicklungspathologischen Mechanismen beschrieben und eine Grundlage zur Entscheidung angeboten, ob eine Elterntherapie, Eltern-Kind-Therapie oder eine Kindtherapie angezeigt ist.
