The postwar years in the UK saw the development of numerous artificial playgrounds intended to compensate children for increasing urbanization and a lack of wild places to play. Many of these sites employed playleaders, whose job was to use play to instill social behavioral norms on children, using games with rules and organized activities. From the early 1970s, that approach began to be replaced by playwork, a nondirective way of working. Playwork marked a rejection of the adult-focused practice of playleadership. Playworkers relied more on an ambiance that reflected their own childhood freedoms and on the growing body of knowledge regarding the importance of play. This body of new literature suggested that play, unadulterated by societal objectives, was crucial to the successful development of all children; that play was not just good for exercise and social interaction, but was vital to brain growth and the child's ability to adapt to a fast changing world. Since those early days, playwork has mutated through a variety of guises, and over the years has begun to explore the child's impact on space, the relationships between child and adult, what playworkers do, the therapeutic aspects of play, and has even taken faltering footsteps into the complexities of the quantum world. Aspects of Playwork reflects this awesome diversity of views and interpretation, moving from the historical to the almost sci-fi and from ghostly traces to the hard realities of being a child and working with children in the 2000s. Children like to play. They get all sorts of benefits from playing. They get the most benefit from play when they are in control of what they are doing. Yet there are lots of circumstances today that mean children are not able to control their own play and that's where playwork comes in, where the role of the playworker is to create environments that enable children to take control of their playing. This volume presents the results of two excavations on the gravel terraces of the Lower Kennet Valley, at Green Park (Reading Business Park) Phase 3 and Moores Farm, Burghfield, Berkshire. The Green Park excavations uncovered a field system and occupation features dating to the middle to late Bronze Age. Five waterholes or wells were distributed across the field system, the waterlogged fills of which preserved wooden revetment structures and valuable environmental evidence. The pottery from the waterholes makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the middle to late Bronze Age transition in the region. Later activity included middle to late Iron Age boundaries, a late Iron Age cremation burial, a Romano-British field system and post-medieval trackways. The Moores Farm excavations revealed occupation from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, middle Bronze Age and early Iron Age. The middle Bronze Age settlement included pits, ovens and possible post structures, and was again situated within a contemporaneous field system dotted with waterholes. As well as discussing these two sites, the volume provides an overview of all of the work to date in the Green Park Farm/Reading Business Park area, exploring the development of this important prehistoric landscape.

The construction of the Asselby to Pannal natural gas pipeline has provided an important opportunity to investigate the early landscapes of North and West Yorkshire. A combination of non-intrusive and intrusive archaeological techniques has been employed, over a five-year period by Oxford Archaeology North and Network Archaeology Ltd, in order to explore the archaeology along the pipeline. The archaeological investigation included the large-scale excavation of 14 archaeological sites, and 136 evaluation trenches. The results of this work will greatly enhance understanding of the archaeology of the southern part of the Vale of York, the Magnesian Limestone areas of North and West Yorkshire, and the eastern margins of the Pennine uplands. Within these distinct landscapes, evidence for early prehistoric through to post-medieval period activity was discovered. However, the majority of excavated remains date to the Iron Age and Roman period, and relate to the creation of field systems and schemes of land division, as well as settlements and enclosures. In addition, parts of the South Dyke and Becca Banks, which form elements of the Aberford Dykes complex, were examined, and this has provided fresh insights into the chronology and use of these important monuments. The volume arises from a multi-disciplinary approach to the archaeology, with the emphasis placed on interpreting the sites within their wider landscape context. It includes the work of a range of authors, drawn from Oxford Archaeology and Network Archaeology Ltd, and also several external specialists.
