Did you ever wonder what you would do if you found a mammoth under
your back yard. Well that's just what happens to the Flom family
when they found that the glaciers had buried a mammoth left under
their farm during the last ice age. The Flom family dairy farm was
typical for Northern Wisconsin in 1969. It was located near the
current day Ice Age Trail that runs through Wisconsin and was
responsible for the hills, forests, lakes and swamps that make up
this part of the country. To the south of this line is some of the
best farm land in the country thanks to the glaciers and to the
north the wooded expanse that most people thing about when they
hear of Northern Wisconsin. The Flom farm is on this dividing line.
The father is trying to turn the farm over to the next generation,
Daniel was trying to make it through college for Natural Resources
and in the middle was what to do with the mammoth they uncovered in
their gravel pit off the back forty
A new stagecoach came to Keystone in 1877 as the city was starting.
It was the transportation and communications network of the day and
without it the southern Black Hills of South Dakota could not have
developed into the gold mining community it became famous for. Join
Luke as he learns to build the Concord Stagecoach back east in the
city of Concord and goes out west to find a new way of life
struggling to establish the first stage coach in Keystone South
Dakota.
Where the glaciers stopped in North West Wisconsin was where our
family started their lives, first building a resort in 1915 and
then loosing it in the Great Depression. I grew up learning the
lessons of life starting in the Army during World War I, and living
long enough to see my grandchildren enjoy the same country I did.
This most unique country made me strong, resourceful and challenged
me to make something of myself with all the adversities that comes
along with raising a family. Along with the hard times came the joy
of nature and respect for the environment that was yet unspoiled
and the family and friends that supported and gave me advise when I
needed it. In the years I grew up in people depended on each other
and the bonding was much closer than it is today. It is my sincere
wish that all who read this book will feel the love I had for my
neighbors as well as nature and the ground that the glaciers last
covered.
