This book came about because the authors had noticed avoidable errors being made by educated citizens as they spoke over the radio and on the television, and wrote in newspapers and magazines. There is no portion of this book that did not find its origins in errors made by correspondents addressing the public in their own fashion. This book may persuade readers to give up on bloopers such as "I got it for free," "Between him and I," and "I visited my relatives in the Sierras." There are sections on verbs, nouns, and how to handle the passage of time. There is advice on how to write with power. For guidance, there are examples of good writing taken from the works of excellent authors. You no doubt have been subjected to books on grammar throughout your education. Our hope is that none has been entertaining and helpful as this book.
Romance, the great teacher The eight short stories in this book tell us how it works out between men and women as they suffer the consequences of their romantic entanglements, although they realize that their lives would be empty without the experiences. Wild West Jed learns that a clever woman uses her body to get what she wants. Later, he finds that the love of his life does also. Junior Year Abroad Allison and Jean Pierre are not surprised that their abandoned love resurfaces after twenty years. Gordon McNair Elaine McNair discovers that the missing ingredient in her relationships has been intellectual compatibility. Emily Evans Emily finds that while life isn't fair, it's the deep appreciation of her that answers questions. Moving North Enrico learns what two women, one on each side of the border, expect from their man. Carrie Reston Carrie cannot define the right man for her. She recognizes him when he shows up. Woman from Peru Angelina puts her foot down after three men have taken advantage of her. The fourth meets her needs. Albany Eric Olson finds a surprising solution to being a too-capable lawyer. Outside forces bring a new life and a new woman.
Humor and romance are the important ingredients of entertaining fiction. In many of our activities we need to be entertained - be it during air travel, on a weekend at the beach, or on nights when there's nothing on television. In the two short novels, "Bunny" and "The Brothers," ordinary Americans resembling people we all know move through experiences that we have had or that are not far-fetched. The romantic interludes in these two stories examine several reasons that a man and woman should pair off. As happens frequently, these relationships fall on hard times. The whys and wherefores are studied. In writing about men and women and their joint activities, the author is careful to use suggestion and allusion in place of the short, direct words. One's imagination is the part of the mind designed for reliving the intimate activities of others. The essays are meant for reading and perhaps rereading. They are views on our modern life, written in a style to cause one to reflect and smile. Taken as a whole, the book is a fine companion.
