The American Body in Context - An Anthology (Paperback): Jessica R. Johnston The American Body in Context - An Anthology (Paperback)
Jessica R. Johnston; Contributions by Samantha Holland, S.Kay Toombs, Frederik Pohl, Hans Moravec, …
R1,121 Discovery Miles 11 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The body is a physical entity and a symbolic artifact. It is both created in the world of nature and also physically reconstructed by a culture. The body is both an internal, subjective environment and simultaneously an object for others to observe and evaluate. Bodily practices, woven within a dense web of social relationships, are then both individual and collective- the individual body expresses cultural values, rules, and regulations in the daily routine of living. The American Body in Context: An Anthology is an interdisciplinary investigation of these body relationships, examining the American historical and contemporary constructions of the body. Through readings and exercises, this new book allows readers to explore interrelationships between the individualized and the constructed nature of embodied experiences. This comprehensive text draws together a wide variety of analyses and demonstrates the interdependence between the individual and the structural (re)productions of embodied experiences in the U.S. This is an excellent text for courses in American studies, American society, cultural and social anthropology, and gender studies.

The Last Theorem (Paperback): Arthur C. Clarke, Frederik Pohl The Last Theorem (Paperback)
Arthur C. Clarke, Frederik Pohl 1
R317 Discovery Miles 3 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The final work from the brightest star in science fiction's galaxy. Arthur C Clarke, who predicted the advent of communication satellites and author of 2001: A Space Odyssey completes a lifetime career in science fiction with a masterwork. 30 light years away, a race known simply as the One Point Fives are plotting a dangerous invasion plan, one that will wipe humankind off the face of the Earth... Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, a young astronomy student, Ranjit Subramanian, becomes obsessed with a three-hundred-year-old theorem that promises to unlock the secrets of the universe. While Ranjit studies the problem, tensions grow between the nations of the world and a UN taskforce headed up by China, America and Russia code-named Silent Thunder begins bombing volatile regimes into submission. On the eve of the invasion of Earth a space elevator is completed, helped in part by Ranjit, which will herald a new type of Olympics to be held on the Moon. But when alien forces arrive Ranjit is forced to question his own actions, in a bid to save the lives of not just his own family but of all of humankind. Co-written with fellow grand master Frederik Pohl, The Last Theorem not only provides a fitting end to the career one of the most famous names in science fiction but also sets a new benchmark in contemporary prescient science fiction. It tackles with ease epic themes as diverse as third world poverty, the atrocities of modern warfare in a post-nuclear age, space elevators, pure mathematics and mankind's first contact with extra-terrestrials.

Gateway - The Best of the SF Masterworks (Paperback): Frederik Pohl Gateway - The Best of the SF Masterworks (Paperback)

R145 Discovery Miles 1 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Wealth ... or death. Those were the choices Gateway offered. Humans had discovered this artificial spaceport, full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious, vanished Heechee. Their destinations are preprogrammed. They are easy to operate, but impossible to control. Some came back with discoveries which made their intrepid pilots rich; others returned with their remains barely identifiable. It was the ultimate game of Russian roulette, but in this resource-starved future there was no shortage of desperate volunteers. Winner of the Hugo, Locus, Nebula and John W. Campbell awards, Gateway begins Pohl's space operatic Heechee saga. He was hugely influential in SF as an author but also an agent and editor, and his career spanned decades. 'A masterpiece of the genre' - Tordotcom 'Gateway deserves its reputation as a classic' - Gareth L. Powell 'One of the best Hugo winners I have read' - Guardian Welcome to The Best Of The Masterworks: a selection of the finest in science fiction

Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel "Danger Moon" is another engaging and highly entertaining tale from a master of science fiction, the late, great Frederik Pohl. Steve Templin had worked as a professional trouble-shooter for years, but now he wanted something different in his life. It wasn't going to be easy, though, and it certainly wasn't going to be cheap. And when Ellen Bishop, owner of Terralune Projects, asked for his help, he agreed... for a price. Something strange was happening to her father's Lunar mining firm and she needed someone like Templin to get to the bottom of it. As he weighed into the situation, he discovered a web of sabotage, greed, and murder-and soon after, the remains of an ancient alien race. The second novel is "The Hidden Universe" by the man who gave us "The Radio Planet," Ralph Milne Farley. Bob Cathcart was happy when his brother, Johnny, had landed a job with the gigantic Frain Corporation. Johnny had signed on and was shipped off to one of Malcolm Frain's secret industrial colonies. But that had been six months earlier, and that was the last time Bob Cathcart had seen or heard from his brother. So with his career as a chemical researcher going nowhere, Bob decided to take a job as a truck driver for the Frain Corporation, partially in hope of finding out what had happened to his missing brother. Like his brother before him, he was also shipped out to one of Malcolm Frain's secret colonies. But after his arrival, it didn't take Bob Cathcart long to discover that the colony he had come to was like no place he had ever seen. In fact, he soon came to the grim realization that this colony might not even be located on Earth

Two of science fiction's most renowned writers join forces for a storytelling sensation. The historic collaboration between Frederik Pohl and his fellow founding father of the genre, Arthur C. Clarke, is both a momentous literary event and a fittingly grand farewell from the late, great visionary author of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The Last Theorem" "is a story of one man's mathematical obsession, and a celebration of the human spirit and the scientific method. It is also a gripping intellectual thriller in which humanity, facing extermination from all-but-omnipotent aliens, the Grand Galactics, must overcome differences of politics and religion and come together . . . or perish.
In 1637, the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat scrawled a note in the margin of a book about an enigmatic theorem: "I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain." He also neglected to record his proof elsewhere. Thus began a search for the Holy Grail of mathematics-a search that didn't end until 1994, when Andrew Wiles published a 150-page proof. But the proof was burdensome, overlong, and utilized mathematical techniques undreamed of in Fermat's time, and so it left many critics unsatisfied-including young Ranjit Subramanian, a Sri Lankan with a special gift for mathematics and a passion for the famous "Last Theorem."
When Ranjit writes a three-page proof of the theorem that relies exclusively on knowledge available to Fermat, his achievement is hailed as a work of genius, bringing him fame and fortune. But it also brings him to the attention of the National Security Agency and a shadowy United Nations outfit called Pax per Fidem, or Peace Through Transparency, whose secretive workings belie its name. Suddenly Ranjit-together with his wife, Myra de Soyza, an expert in artificial intelligence, and their burgeoning family-finds himself swept up in world-shaking events, his genius for abstract mathematical thought put to uses that are both concrete and potentially deadly.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to anyone on Earth, an alien fleet is approaching the planet at a significant percentage of the speed of light. Their mission: to exterminate the dangerous species of primates known as homo sapiens.

A cynical and compelling tale of politics, exploitation and colonisation on another planet The discovery of another habitable world might spell salvation to the three bitterly competing power blocs of the resource-starved 21st century; but when their representatives arrive on Jem, with its multiple intelligent species, they discover instead the perfect situation into which to export their rivalries. Subtitled, with savage irony, 'The Making of a Utopia', JEM is one of Frederik Pohl's most powerful novels.
