The Spell of Responsibility - Labor, Criminality, Philosophy (Hardcover): Frieder Vogelmann The Spell of Responsibility - Labor, Criminality, Philosophy (Hardcover)
Frieder Vogelmann; Translated by Daniel Steuer
R3,935 Discovery Miles 39 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most people would agree that we should behave and act in a responsible way. Yet only 200 years ago, 'responsibility' was only of marginal importance in discussions of law and legal practice, and it had little ethical significance. What is the significance of the fact that 'responsibility' now plays such a central role in, for example, work, the welfare state, or the criminal justice system? What happens when individuals are generally expected to think of themselves as 'responsible' agents? And what are the consequences of the fact that the philosophical analysis of 'responsibility' focuses almost exclusively on conditions of agency that are mostly absent from real life? In this book, Frieder Vogelmann demonstrates how large parts of philosophy have fallen under responsibility's spell, and he uses a Foucauldian approach in an attempt to break it. The three axes of power, knowledge, and self are used in a detailed analysis of the practical regimes of labour (including the welfare state), criminality (including policing, punishment practices, and criminal proceedings), and philosophy, and of the two subject positions required by 'responsibility' - those of the attributors and bearers of responsibility - within them. The power relations between these positions, which Vogelmann carefully excavates from the grounds of our practices, reveal that the deck is stacked unevenly from the start. The Birth of Austerity - German Ordoliberalism and Contemporary Neoliberalism (Hardcover): Thomas Biebricher, Frieder Vogelmann The Birth of Austerity - German Ordoliberalism and Contemporary Neoliberalism (Hardcover)
Thomas Biebricher, Frieder Vogelmann
R3,652 Discovery Miles 36 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ordoliberalism and the 'Freiburg School' have gained traction in contemporary political economy in response to two factors: a rising interest in governmentality studies and the banking, financial and sovereign debt crisis in Europe. In the face of these crises, Germany has assumed a position of quasi-hegemony in the European Union, making decisions about bailouts, the politics of crisis management and the rise of austerity. This volume gathers together English translations of seminal ordoliberal texts by thinkers ranging from Walter Eucken and Wilhelm Roepke to Franz Boehm, Alexander Rustow and Hans Grossmann-Doerth. Offering some foundational insights into ordoliberalism, these essays give insight into a field that is much misunderstood outside Germany. The second half of the book comprises of analyses of contemporary issues in light of ordoliberal thought, showing how its ideas endure and relate directly to austerity policy across Europe.

Foucault lesen (German, Paperback, 1. Aufl. 2017): Frieder Vogelmann Foucault lesen (German, Paperback, 1. Aufl. 2017)

R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days
