L'idealisme allemand aura ete profondement marque par la pensee critique de Jacobi (1743-1819): par dela la fameuse Querelle du pantheisme, le Dialogue de 1797, presente sous le titre David Hume et la croyance, Idealisme et realisme, nous introduit non seulement au versant negatif, mais aussi a la dimension fondamentalement positive d'une pensee de l'existence; il s'agit en effet d'ecouter, comme nous y invite le traducteur, une voix singuliere qui cherche a faire entendre sa propre conception du donne. Par un habile retour sur la pensee de Hume, Jacobi pose la croyance, en un sens quasi-phenomenologique, comme le point de depart de tout discours philosophique en quete du vrai et reconsidere le statut de la rationalite finie. Ce recueil comprend aussi la Preface pouvant servir d'introduction a l'ensemble des ecrits philosophiques de l'auteur, preparee pour une nouvelle edition de ses oeuvres en 1812, et le fameux Appendice sur l'idealisme transcendantal. On decouvre en Jacobi une figure qui a influence Fichte, Schelling, Hegel ou Kierkegaard.
