Dies ist ein Buch uber Erziehungsprozesse, denen Kinder und Ju gendliche in unserer Gesellschaft seit uber zweihundert Jahren ausge setzt sind. Es handelt sich um eine Auseinandersetzung mit Normen und Werten; es geht um Ziele, die von der Padagogik gesetzt werden und auf die hinerzogen werden soll. Genauer: Mein Thema ist die Pro blematisierung jenes Moral- und Tugendkatalogs, der sich im Vorfel de der Aufklarung konstituierte und der seit den gesellschaftlichen Veranderungen des 18. Jahrhunderts in der Erziehung breiten Raum einnimmt. Es geht um eine Auswahl von Einzeltugenden, die seither den "burgerlichen" Moralkodex ausmachen, also um Ordnung, Sau berkeit, Dankbarkeit, Ehrlichkeit, Gehorsam, Fleiss, Bescheidenheit und um sexuelles Wohlverhalten. Es geht um Erziehungsvorstellungen, die in vordergrundiger Betrachtung oft als ruckstandig und uberholt an gesehen werden, die in Wirklichkeit aber in der bestehenden Erzie hungspraxis eine ungebrochene Bedeutung behalten haben. Meine Studie befasst sich jedoch nicht nur mit den Erwartungen, die die Gesellschaft an ihre Mitglieder - und insbesondere an die Kin der und Heranwachsenden - richtet, sondern sie lenkt die Aufmerk samkeit auch auf die Mittel und Methoden, mit denen die Gesell schaft, sprich: Erziehung, ihre Anspruche durchzusetzen versucht. Diese beiden Aspekte, die Zielfrage und die methodischen Mass nahmen, sollen in doppelter Perspektive vorgefuhrt werden: in ihrer historischen Entwicklung und in ihren aktuellen Erscheinungen, in der Erziehung der Gegenwart."
